Hand of Fear

Nerdius Maximus

Fleet Captain
So I watched this earlier, and I was kind of taken aback by the appearance of the Tardis interior. I really liked it though, it was cool in an H.G. Wells kind of way. Was this the first time the set was used? How long did it last?

That's the alternate or secondary control room.

It made it's debut the story before that one, The Masque of Mandragora - the first story of Season 14 and lasted throughout that season, though the last time it was seen was in The Robots of Death. There was no TARDIS interior shown in The Talons of Weng Chiang (last story of season 14) or Horror of Fang Rock (first story of season 15) so it may have persisted until then in an offscreen sense.

Ah, kinda like the battle bridge on TNG! :rommie: I haven't seen the Robots of Death in years. I need to get that one. Didn't realize I'd seen that control room before. I really like it, though!

It was a classy piece of set design if you ask me. They should bring it back in the new series one day..

Didn't they use a similar console room in the Troughton era? I thought the Second Doctor played the recorder, and that's what Sarah found.

Yeah I thought so too when I first started rediscovering Who a few years back, but it seems that was just a bit of continuity porn thrown in there by the Hinchcliffe production team..

I like this serial, love seeing Sarah Jane possessed. :D

And as for the secondary console room, I've always liked it. I've always loved the console room in the movie too.

Oh, and I just watched this one again, myself. I posted this in another thread, so I'll re-post it here:

I just watched that last night for the first time in a looong time. Couple of things...

1 ) Sara looked silly in that Strawberry Shortcake outfit

2 ) I could see what looked like Sara's panty-line everytime we got a rearshot. Either that, or she has an incredibly well-defined ass. My wife was the one who pointed it out, of all people. Call me a perv if you like, but Liz Sladen is H-O-T and I make no excuses for it.

3 ) The actress that played Eldrad....is she known for anything else?

4 ) Liz Sladen was, and still is, smoking. Just saying...

I love the secondary console room and I'm sorry it only appeared in three serials (it's not seen in The Deadly Assassin or The Face of Evil either). I would love to see it again.

The secondary control room was okay, but I dunno, it just didn't right without a moving center collumn.

As far as I know, the second Doctor only ever used the white control room onscreen. Maybe he just used it to store his spare recorder. :)

Hey that reminds me. Does anyone know where the recorder originated? I know theres that one publicity shot of him playing it in the console room, but apart from The Three Doctors, I've never been able to find out which episodes it was featured in.

The recorder first appeared in his first story Power of the Daleks. I believe he pulls it out of a trunk of random items (like a hand mirror when he suddenly understands Ben and Polly's aversion to him).

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the secondary console room set got damaged in storage between seasons. The wood warped or something.

Yep. Here it is from the article on "The Invisible Enemy" from A Brief History of Time Travel

"Two weeks later, the second studio session spanned April 24th to 26th. The first day included the debut of the new TARDIS console room. With the wooden version introduced the previous year having warped in storage, Williams opted to return to a simplified variation on the predominantly white, more futuristic set employed during Doctor Who's first thirteen seasons. This was conceived by longtime Doctor Who designer Barry Newbery, who elected to simply retain the TARDIS console prop which had been used prior to Season Fourteen."

As a side note, Newberry was not only responsible for producing a new white console room for Invisible Enemy, but also designed the wooden one for Masque of Mandragora, and rejigged the original console room when he replaced original designer Peter Brachaki for the remake of the very first episode, An Unearthly Child.

The importance of #2 completely overwhelms any truth in #1. It's one of my very favorite Sara Jane costumes!

It is in The Deadly Assassin, actually; the Doctor watches Runcible the Fatuous on Gallifreyan TV on the scanner screen in Episode One. That might be the only time you see it in that story, however, I can't remember.

Oh, you're right! I had forgotten about that. :o

This story has one of my all time favourite bloopers in it. Watch the bit when the Doctor is explaining why they're not all dead from the explosion, and he uses his hands to demonstrates how the blast imploded instead of exploded. He does it back to front, moving his arms out wide when he says imploded, and brings them in together while saying exploded. Liz has an odd kind of glance at him, but they carry on regardless.
