HALO movie status...?

I last heard it was caught in limbo somewhere, but Peter Jackson is still interested in producing it.

Last October, director Neill Blomkamp said that the Halo film was dead in the water. Both studios financing the project (Universal and FOX) backed out, allegedly due to an out-of-control budget, and while Peter Jackson's representative has said the project is still in pre-production, there's been no news on it for more than half a year, now.

For all intents and purposes, the movie's done.

If they would let some Indy film makers make it without the threat of MS copyright lawyers going flood on their ass I am sure something cool could be made.

Those basically were pitches for the movie.
What I find stupid is that Microsoft has 45 billion dollars to throw around on Yahoo, but they don't have 100 million to make a freaking movie?
The reason why the studios backed out was because they were asking for a lot of money but also retained nearly all of the rights and creative control. Basically, the movie had to kill at the box office for the studios to make money and no one reasonable would do that.

it's fucked up, its a garanteed hit, but MS won't help finance it, i think the budget Jackson wants is something like $200mil (they won't spend $200m on a super hot property, but thats about what crapfests like waterworld and the postman over ran to) maybe if jackson said costner was gonna be the chief (shudder)

Costner can be the chief if they keep him in the damn suit with his helmet always on and over dub his voice with the MC voice from the game.

Is it?

I think that as of the new year, Halo 3 had sold a little over eight million copies worldwide. Let's be generous (taking into account the hot releases already this year, including Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2) and say, for argument's sake, that in the intervening five months, the game has moved a few more hundred thousand units and the worldwide total now sits at 8.5 million units sold.

Assume, then, that each and every single one of those eight and a half million people are going to go see a Halo movie. The average ticket price in 2007 was $6.88, so let's assume it's now $7. That puts the box-office intake at $59.5 million. Worldwide.

That's ... not a lot.

Yeah, there's no reason why it couldn't be another Speed Racer.
But then again, it could hit like a comic book movie and become big. I mean, who actually reads comic books now? Even on this board it's a minority. But people seem to gravitate toward the comic book movies.
