Halloween (2018)

The trailer for the new Halloween sequel by acclaimed indie director David Gordon Green (George Washington, Prince Avalanche, Joe, Stronger) just came out. The movie ignores all of the sequels, is executive produced and scored by John Carpenter and stars Jamie Lee Curtis and original Michael Meyers actor Nick Castle.

I haven't been a fan of most of Blumhouse's work, being rather cold on much of it except Get Out, but if Danny McBride's script was enough to get both Carpenter and Curtis on board (if memory serves, she only did Resurrection because of a contractual obligation), then that's enough to get me in a theater. The handwaving of the sequels in that trailer was nice, too.

It looks ok. I'm a fan of H20 and the first Zombie film though. This doesn't look too radically different to be groundbreaking.

Didn't the character of Jamie Lee died in her previous Halloween movie?
This one ignores all the other sequels. The franchise's continuity is a bit of a clusterfuck with different sequels ignoring other ones, but here's the different continuities.

Original Continuity:
  • Halloween (1978)
  • Halloween II (1981)
  • Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Meyers (1988)
  • Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Meyers (1989)
  • Halloween: The Curse of Michael Meyers (1995)

First Alternate Continuity
  • Halloween (1978)
  • Halloween II (1981)
  • Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
  • Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

Second Alternate Continuity
  • Halloween (1978)
  • Halloween (2018)

Rob Zombie Remake Continuity
  • Halloween (2007)
  • Halloween II (2009)

Completely Unrelated Standalone Film about Warlocks and Robots from Back When John Carpenter Wanted to Kill Off Michael Meyers and Make the Franchise a Series of Completely Unrelated Standalone Films by Different Filmmakers That All Took Place on Halloween
  • Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

And then of course, there is Halloween III that has nothing to do with Michael Myers. Which i always found odd

The idea at the time was to turn the HALLOWEEN movies into an anthology series, featuring a new Halloween-themed horror story every years, because they didn't think they could extend the "Michael Myers" storyline indefinitely. ("What? He just keeps coming back and stabbing people, year after year?")

But when audiences balked, they went back to the whole "Michael is on the loose!" thing--and the HALLOWEEN series turned into the "Michael Myers" series.

Yeah its all in the naming and people associate Halloween movies with Michael Myers. It's should have been just called: 'Season of the Witch' or maybe, 'Season of the Witch: A Halloween Story'

I can almost see Halloween: The Curse of Michael Meyers as being in the same universe as Season of the Witch in that--in both, there are cult-like orginizations at work.

I'm not big on horror films usually, at least not the newer ones, but the original Halloween and its sequel were always favorites, and this looks like it's recaptured what made the original great.

That opening scene in the prison yard is incredibly tense and creepy, and even though you know Michael is going to be behind the closet door at the end, it somehow still manages to be effective and scary.

Glad to see they got Curtis back again, along with Carpenter producing. This looks promising.

The second trailer was just released. This continues to look promising.

IIRC, aren't the characters in Hallowe'en 3: SotW actually watching the 1978 film on television in-universe?

^ IIRC, Tom Atkins' Daniel Challis is sitting in a bar and an advertisement for the original Halloween comes on the tv with footage of Michael Myers walking down the stairs.

I'm looking forward to this one. After seeing Jordan Peele's take on horror with Get Out, I'm really interested in seeing another comedian, Danny "Kenny Powers" McBride's take on horror. I also love that Laurie Strode now appears to inhabit the Dr. Sam Loomis role of running around yelling at everybody about how dangerous Michael Myers is

I'm so glad that you put that up because even as a fan of the franchise I couldn't explain it ;)

Interesting that they are even ignoring part 2 so that the whole "killing family motive" can be dropped.

I'll catch this even though I always considered 1,2 and H2O to be the definitive storyline for the franchise.

A track from John Carpenter's score for the new movie (including a nice chunk of the main theme) has just been officially released. The man hasn't lost his touch. This sounds great.

So the movie is out and I'm curious to know everyone's thoughts. I plan to catch it at some point this next week

Apparently this is supposed to be good, so I will go see it. Blumhouse is taking its place among the big Horror Studios these days. They even had a House dedicated to them at Halloween Horror Nights this year.

Just came from seeing it. When the poll thread goes up I intend to give it an A or an A+. Best thing about it is Jamie Lee Curtis's performance. Let's just say that she turned Laurie Strode into the poster model for Doomsday Preppers everywhere.
