Not me...
I'm blind in one eye...
And my local IRS office does my taxes quarterly. For Free. And Right. And if there happens to be an error it's their fault.
I highly recommend a CPA over those "tax-in-the-box" places. HR Block and Jackson-Hewett are one reason why tax laws are so screwy; otherwise, they wouldn't have a job. My ex-wife used to work for JH (hell, I think she still does during tax season) and the employees receive some kind of "training" every year. Sorry, but there's no way in hell I'd trust some lemming with my taxes over someone who really knows tax laws.
Yes.
ON THE OTHER HAND they do my taxes every year, never had an audit. ONE TIME I let Jackson Hewitt do my taxes and WHAM audit and JH was all "LOL WHUT?" about it. Rotten service.
Block or do it myself, really can't do it myself anymore I got business stuff now.
My kids and I saw that for the first time tonight. It creeped them out.
I use Turbotax. If it's good enough for the treasury secretary to get his taxes right it's good enough for me. Did them on Saturday afternoon and they were accepted Sunday. Should have the money in a couple of days. And I used both eyes.![]()
I wouldn't trust a place like Block with tax returns. They basically make money by having inexperienced drones doing low-level returns. You'd be better off either doing it yourself if your taxes are straightforward or paying a little extra to get someone who can offer you a truly personalised service if your taxes are more complex. I'm sure Block does have people who CAN do this, but whether you'll get them is a whole other matter.
The advert is the least of the creepy problems with firms like Block...![]()

I've had the same tax-lady six years running now and she's been there 15 years. No complaints. *runs off to spend 5-digit tax return*
Exactly. The tax preparers receive a bonus based on the total amount of refunds they get for each customer. Believe me, they play fast and loose with the tax laws to get people large returns. My CPA didn't even have to explain to me that you're better off getting a refund as close to $0 as possible or even owing a few hundred dollars to the government. It never ceases to amaze me, every tax year, the number of people who believe the tax refund is "free money". They then claim they "wouldn't be better off" by having that extra money in their monthly paychecks. Really?I wouldn't trust a place like Block with tax returns. Not to be pedantic, but the return is the form you file your taxes on. If you receive money back based on filing, it's a refund.
I would expect a good tax person to help me plan my taxes a little bit better so that I'm not loaning the government at least 10K interest free in a year. I'd rather have the $866/ month in my cash flow so that I could decide what to do with it, but that's me.
That's where the tax in the box shops fall short, in my opinion. All they do is put the right numbers in the proper boxes on the return because that's what they're trained to do. The more they do, the more income they generate for the firm.
Taxes can be planned and managed, not just reacted to. With a nearly 40% reduction in market value, how many Block tax preparers were talking to their customers about tax harvesting at the end of last year? How many know what tax harvesting is? How many talk to their customers about investment product diversification so that future tax bills can be managed and minimized?
Yeah, my brother in law has been working with them for a few years now, so we get ours done for about twenty bucks every year under a friends and family plan. Since we started with them, we've been getting bigger refunds every year.I wouldn't trust a place like Block with tax returns. Well H & R Block started charging too much so I found a CPA who does them cheaper and he has a Wii he lets me play while he is doing them.
