Guillermo del Toro exits "The Hobbit"

This sucks. Apparently because of the delay, and the time it would take for del Toro to make the films -- taking into consideration the two years he's already spent working on the film with WETA, Peter Jackson, et. al -- was too much for Pan's Labrynth director Guillermo del Toro who exits the two Hobbit films currently in pre-production.

Purportedly the decision to leave was amicable, and solely del Toro's decision, and the transition to find a new director will be "seamless and uneventful". Del Toro will continue to work with Jackson, WETA and the production while he finishes co-writing the script and then will leave the production. During that time, del Toro, Jackson, and WB/MGM will find a new director for the film.

First James Bond, and now Lord of the Rings. Yet another casualty for MGM during this legal crisis.

Personally at this point I would just like to see Peter actually direct this.

Such a pity. I don't understand how people can love money when it directly ruins potentially good stuff like this.

You'd think MGM would be getting more offers than it is. What other studio wouldn't want to own the Rings and Bond cash cows? How much backdoor wheeling, dealing, and screwing over is really going on with this company? Its so frustrating to follow these reports with all the back and forth and legalese about who's what.

Maybe if the right director shows interest it will spark some studio movement. I don't blame del Toro, though. He's got other things to do. The scary thing would be when any scripting ceases, or Jackson halts the pre work and all. Pity.

HAven't been that impressed with anything he has done, sorry for you avatar.

This sucks. I was looking forward to seeing del Toro's take on it. I hope they find somebody good to replace him.

I was half joking. :rommie:

Verbinski is pretty busy right now, but it would have been interesting to see the Hobbit movies with his brand of humor.

If they get someone new, it needs be someone who has worked on a big movie before. They just can't pick up some random no name director.

Does this mean GMT will now go and do 'At The Mountains of Madness' and possibly 'Hellboy 3'? If so then I'd call that a fair trade off...but only just!

Guillermo felt like such a natural fit for 'The Hobbit' I have no idea who they'd use to replace him? That is, assuming Jackson is still certain he doesn't want the director's chair again (and who could blame him?)

Neill Blomkamp may be an obvious choice given he already has a pretty good relationship with Jackson and his Weta companies, but I doubt he'd do it. Bryan Singer might actually not be such a bad choice, in all seriousness. His geek credentials are solid and he has a proven track record at making very good films with ensemble casts.
Whoever they get, it needs to be someone who's willing to get on-board with the work that's already been done and not the type to run roughshod over the development material just to put their own stamp on it, but that's a worse case scenario of course. I suppose it's also possible that one of the Weta 2nd unit or ADs have the chops for it.

It's unfortunate for fans of the source material who wanted to see del Toro's take on it. But honestly, del Toro has a long list of potential projects floating around the internet and almost all of them interest me a lot more than The Hobbit, which sounds like it would have (and kind of already has) eaten up a whole lot of the director's time. So from my perspective, I'm just interested in seeing what it is he moves on to next.

Michael Bay!

Just imaging the heavy artillery Hobbit military firepower that will be unleashed at the Battle of Five Armies and the rock and roll soundtrack to accompany it.

Peter Jackson or just don't bother. Movies shouldn't be made just for the hell of it. It will suffer if they bring someone in just looking for a pay day.

Jackson would be great, though I also agree with whoever above said Cuaron. And it sounds as though enough pre-production work has been done that what they need most is less of an all-around visionary and more of an actor's director who can get grounded performances while delivering the creature goods. And Cuaron might arguably be an even better choice than Jackson in that regard.

Jonathan Mostow and Chris Weitz would both be solid choices. As would, frankly, Steven Sommers - it's easy to forget that there are legitimatey creepy moments in the first Mummy, and a break from the nonstop tech-digital crap he's sunk into would do him a world of good.

Well, nice going, MGM. Let's not put on a show!
