Makes sense. Some co-workers and I were just discussing the news and we all feel the Guardians brand is tainted by association now. Everything from Gunn's tweets themselves, to anger over the alt-right hitjob aspect, to the way the Batista has been speaking out has turned the whole thing into a PR disaster. Textbook Streisand Effect. Disney should have sat on their thumbs and waited; I won't be surprised if vol. 3 never happens at all.

Too bad. I really liked the first two movies.

I'm not surprised, without Gunn it would probably be best to just take their time and not rush things.

I have no doubt that the movie will happen eventually. There's just too much money to be made on the Guardians brand.

It won't be a long delay--the Guardians are much too popular and they will want to make the movie before any contractual time limits run out (if such a thing exists in their movie deal). Any of the actors still not wanting to reprise their roles after that will be replaced and new characters introduced.

Damn. Disappointing but unsurprising. I highly suspect that part of the "regrouping" will include having enough time to produce a whole new script instead of using Gunn's or make something up on the fly.

I would hope they would use his original script. He's the reason those movies worked. He's why Rocket is one of the most beloved characters in the MCU. He went in from the angle that Rocket was this tortured being that slowly learns to trust the other Guardians and open himself back up emotionally. And that because the case for the rest of the Guardians, they've all been hurt and were broken people who accidentally found they worked well together and became a family. It's all common stuff in Gunn's films, empathy for characters who don't normally get empathy. Like the monster Grant Grant in Slither and The Crimson Bolt and Boltie in Super. It would be awful to lose that, like cutting out the heart of the series.

I agree. I don't think it's entirely impossible to find another writer who can do justice to the characters and the way they've been set up, but it doesn't seem very probable.

And I don't see much logic in tossing the script out in the first place. He already did the work. They already paid him for it. Using what was already finished (with maybe a few tweaks, as that is something that always happens on movies) doesn't somehow negate the fact that they fired him. There's no need to throw the baby out with the bath-water.

Very true. I suppose that other directors could make it work, I felt that the Russo brothers really did the Guardians justice in IW. But without the script..... I just don't know.

I also very much doubt this movie is never going to get made. For both the money GotG makes and the whole storyline the MCU movies make up, it's very tricky to simply drop it. But delay it for a few months, pull another one up for now, and there you go.

To be clear, I also want them to use Gunn's script for all the reasons mentioned. I merely suspect that part of the delay will include either script rewriting or writing from scratch, especially if the new director doesn't like it.

What a mess Disney made for themselves with a knee jerk reaction.
If they don't use the script that won't go down well with the cast or fans. But even if they use it the same magic touch won't be there. The music, the world building etc.

Will the actors give it their all regardless and help keep the magic despite the missing piece of the puzzle? Or will they phone it in because of contracts forcing them to do this? I'm betting the latter. Which almost makes me wonder, what's the point.
American politics ruin so much in the world of late and now the entertainment we use to escape the nonsense. Yay.

Maybe we'll get lucky and the director they choose will secretly consult with Gunn the whole way through.

Tweaking Avengers 4 would give them chance to write out Drax and, if Guardians 3 isn't to factor in the next phase, splinter the team.

A new Guardians iteration could then be organically factored in at a later date. In the meantime, some of the characters could feature in other movies.

Groot, Rocket and Hulk in space for instance...

If Disney Studios is that hellbent upon disassociating themselves from Gunn, then what is the point of using his script?

I have to be honest . . . without his input, I don't see myself remaining interested in the "Guardians" output.

I won’t be seeing it. It will be like seeing a zombie of someone you know.

Avengers 4 is already shot, script is done and i doubt they'd scramble for some reshoots just to write out one character in a believable way.

Disney simply panicked and given how this has blown up in their face they didn't want to look weak and go back on their decision. If they had kept their cool, let Gunn make public amends and issue some bullshit generic PR statement (and maybe spin it to actually get some positive PR as reformers of the formerly wicked) nothing would have happened.

People are hypocrites in general.. the louder they yell the quieter they are when nobody is watching and their doing the exact same thing they went up in arms. So Disney wouldn't have lost out at all, Guardians would have been on track productionwise and they could have added a few hundred million to their accounts.

Now it's a big gamble... Gunn was central to the surprising success and i don't believe they can catch the same style again. I don't think the actor's hearts are in it anymore. They will show up of course, no one in Hollywood wants a black mark on his record and a reputation to be difficult to work with but i don't think they'll bring their A game.

So a huge clusterfuck and everybody lost just because Disney fell for some online trolls.

The movie was about to go into production, people were ready to start working on it and now they’re out of a job. Gunn was also supposed to direct footage for Disney’s Guardian roller coaster at Epcot, which they’re already building. He was part of the design process for it.

He didn't write most of the first one, and I would argue it is the better film for it. I'm much more worried about them finding a director who suits the material. There are stronger writers than Gunn out there who can do the job, especially with his script to work from.
