Grounded

Saratoga NX-3842

Supreme Overlord of the Universe
Is this any good? I tried reading it in the 7th grade and couldn't get through it. I've been thinking about trying it again... any thoughts?

The concept of the mud/magma monster was neat but come on we all know that no lasting harm will come of the ship or crew.

Biggest complaint about those novels from that era... Some good stories but in the end All Is As It Was.

I don't get what the problem is with that. The same can be said of virtually every episode of the TV shows, or of most series-fiction installments in general. You know the heroes will almost always come out alive and well; the interest is in seeing how they get there.

It's still better when books are freed of those constraints.

Not a dealbreaker when they aren't, but better if they are.

Like the OP I read this book - one of the few I have actually - when I was younger. And yes well the above statement all was as it was is true; it was true of all those books at that time. But when it opened with the Enderprise scheduled for destruction and with Data onboard too, my youthful mind freaked out. Not quite getting the above statement's implications. But then when you read abook you have to set aside those preconceptions in order to buy into it anyway.

If I recall I did like the book with the A and B plot. Plus the unconvential moster/alien concept reminded me a little of Artemus [sp] in the beginning so wasn't sure where it was going. But I liked it if I recall correctly. Though it was followed up by Reunion which was wow in comparison if I recollect.

Well with the TV show there was always a slight chance they might shake things up... They never took that route but there was the possibility.

With that series of novels... you knew going into the story that Everything Would Remain as It Was. Kind of a letdown after some of the stories were told... I can name a couple of novels that would have lead to interesting continuities if they were "canon" like the show.
