Gold/green is command, blue is sciences, red is the practical stuff-- grunt work, security, plus keeping the ship running. That latter one involves plenty of science, but technological, applied to the operation of the ship. Any deviations from these would be snafus....Social sciences in red? Should be blue. I guess that would be Ann Mulhall. Oops.

There are so many deviations that the whole idea of the colors being related to departments might be considered invalid. Perhaps the three colors go with the three shifts instead, and heroic action forces the summoning of specialists from different shifts, or other sorts of grab-what-you-can?
