With 355 wins, perhaps the last pitcher in our life time to pass 350 and 1 ahead of Roger Clemens, Former Cub, Brave, Dodger and Padre Greg Maddux has retired from baseball.

As a long time Braves fan, allow me to say that I enjoyed watching Mad Dog pitch for many years. I had the fortune to see him pitch live on many occasions, including 1 World Series game in Atlanta.

Sports superstars should look to this man as a role model and a true champion.

There was a time when I called Roger Clemens the greatest pitcher of this generation. With everything else that has happened in the past couple of seasons, I can't say that. For me there isn't any doubt that Maddux is the best of this generation has seen.

Maddux was so impressive because he didn't overpower people, and he used his stuff and smarts to get the outs.

Not to mention the Gold Gloves.... 18 I think?

He was an excellent fielding pitcher
And it should be noted that in this year's post season with the Dodgers, he pitched only 3 innings and had a 0.00 ERA.
Why the Dodgers didn't use him more is beyond me?

I don't think any pitcher in the last half century used the corners of the plate as well as Maddux.

As for Clemens being better than Maddux... I didn't think he was before the Clemens' scandal...
Maddux was never an attention whore... He went out there and did his job. Year in, year out...
You wanted a 3rd pitcher in your rotation, he would do the job
He didn't have to have a 22,222,222 pro-rated check while wearing #22 like Clemens. He took reasonable money and did a great job. And a fair batter :D

I never got to see him pitch. I still haven't gotten to see Tom Glavine pitch either. I'm pathetic.

The most important question of the day: Can he finally grow facial hair or does he still look like a 16 year old even on the eve of his retirement? :D

Were Maddux and Alyssa Milano an item some time ago? it sounds familiar but maybe it was merely rumor.

Maybe I'm getting him confused with another baseball player. Heaven knows she's stolen home on quote a few over the years.

Well maybe the umps will let someone else have the corner of the plate now...

Class act, fun to watch, be interesting to see where he goes after baseball.

Can you imagine what some teams will be willing to pay him, to hire on as their pitchign coach?

Nah, they're retiring the outside corners with him

As for what he will do afterwords, I have a funny feeling that Greg Maddux will retire from the public eye... In 2+ decades in pro baseball, he was never rude, but his personal life was never a public spectacle!

Indeed, a genuine legend, and a true gentleman. It has been a privilege to see him in action, even if it has only been on late-night TV from across the pond.:techman:

He has certainly given sterling service to the game, and his clubs, during his long career. Over twenty years in the sport and he is still top drawer, staggering!
I wish him all the best in his retirement.:)

He was an all time great and I will miss watching him pitch.

Are Glavine and Smoltz retired at this point as well? They both had major injuries last year and are similarly old. It'd be awesome to see them all elected to the HOF the same year.
