The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

It has been reported that the superhero costume for the big-screen Green Lantern movie, currently shooting in New Orleans under the direction of Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Edge of Darkness) and starring Ryan Reynolds, will be an entirely CGI creation.

Reynolds has been spotted running around New Orleans in a motion-capture suit, and costume designer Ngila Dickson had this to say in regarding the unique approach to the Green Lantern costume.

Ngila (Dickson, costume designer) was tasked with trying to find a way to do something that stands apart from all of the other superheroes spandex suit designs we've seen in the past.

The Green Lantern suit is something that should look alien — it needs to seem other worldly. It encompasses any creature that wears the ring, and Hal Jordan is the first human to ever wear the suit. This was a chance for Dickson to do something different. You also have to consider that Hal changes into the suit multiple times in mid scene, and the cg also allows him to do this.

I've heard that when the cg is complete, the suit will look like a manifestation of his power.

Personally, I think this is a really cool and revolutionary idea. It not only allows the costume to be truly alien and form-fitting to Jordan's physique, but it means that Campbell, the costume designer, and the people working on the film understand the uniqueness of the Green Lantern property.

The fact that they're trying to do something beyond your ordinary superhero spandex outfit is really comforting and inspiring in my opinion. While it might offset others, I think this is a really cool idea and I look forward to see how it looks in the finished product and onscreen.

I wonder how much of the budget is going to animate the suit??? It is either going to look really awesome or very, very stupid. Don't get your hopes up until you see something first.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

Interesting idea...not sure that I dig it but I'll agree that it seems revolutionary in terms of superhero costuming. Also it does make a degree of sense since Green Lanterns can make their uniforms appear using their ring so having it CG allows a lot more freedom for this particular effect to work IMO.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

As far as I remember, the cape in Superman Returns was CGI-d in motion (hence the absence of a yellow S on the back, as this was too hard to animate in flight). And we've had Spider-man CGId' in motion. But this is the first time costume has been CGI'd onto a real actor. Interesting approach - though it removes the usual excitement of us getting to see sneak pics of the actor in his costume onset.

Guess we'll have to wait for an official photo this time!

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

I just hope it'll look good. Stupid thing to say I know, but I hope he doesn't look all rubbery like Neo did in the Big Brawl part of Matrix Reloaded.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

I think this is a bad idea and I fear it will make the suit look artificial and cheesy. I mean obviously you want the green energy burning off him in action and all that, but the very suit itself?

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

CG have progressed quite far since The Matrix and Blade and Spider Man 1. Iron Man wasn't 100% real, that worked out just fine. By this point I'd assume a massive-budget movie would have done screen tests to make sure that one of the key special effect elements in the movie, one that will be on screen most of the time, would look good before committing to it.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

^^ That's true. Iron Man looked great.

It's just when I hear about CG used for people it makes me think of the scene of Annakin riding that weird Naboo cow thing in Episode II. That was terrible.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

As much time has passed between the SW prequels and now as between the Prequels and Terminator 2. Artists are less limited by the technology now, and the tools they have access to are much better now after a couple of decades of trial and error and figuring out ways to avoid things like the really obvious rubber-band effect of CGI people jumping around. If it's done properly anyway.

If done really well it could be like Iron Man 2 and we wouldn't know the difference.

Just the bottom half is CGI but it still looks great

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

Thanks for that.
It's nice to see that they only CGed what they 'needed' to there.

Just remember that his is Teh InterWeb, where people would scream and criticize for *not* using CG (were it mentioned as an option) as often as people would (and are) scream *because* CG is being used. They ignore (and you point out) that CG has improved over the years; however, people tend to gloss over that. I liken it to stop-motion animatronics that were used in King Kong (1933) and later movies, such as The Empire Strikes Back.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

Casino Royale had very spartan use of CG (I think mainly for a few of the stunts and stuff it was used).

Isn't the emblem on the uniform in the current comics kind of ring-generated as well?

In any other situation, I might agree, but you're forgetting that Green Lantern isn't your ordinary superhero, and also, his costume isn't your traditional spandex outfit. The costume comes from the ring -- it materializes when he puts the ring on -- so there had to be a certain amount of CGI in order to effectively bring that to life. Also, this allows for the material to appear genuinely alien... it makes sense when Hal Jordan has to activate the costume mid-scene for the costume to be CGI anyway.

Re: The "Green Lantern" suit will be CG

It would be cool if the GL costume has a kind of biological look to it. Like flesh on flesh. Something that breathes and sweats and bleeds.
