Great Moments: Wes & His Mom

Star Treks

Eighth in a series of threads exploring great moments of character interaction between two TNG characters. As you probably know by now, I'd assert that every single character pairing has at least one classic moment, line, scene, or episode worthy of mention.

I know Wesley Crusher isn't the most popular TNG character (and he certainly isn't one of my favorites), but I hope most people aren't so cynical as to assert that he has no good moments on the show. Can you think of any nice moments between Dr. Crusher and Wesley? I thought it was kind of nice (and rather different for Trek) to see a mother-son relationship on the show. With most of the bridge crew being non-family men, it was nice to be reminded that at least someone on the crew actually had a family.

Any moments between Wes & his mom that you'd like to mention?

They had a really nice scene in "The Bonding" (probably the best scene in that episode), talking about Jack Crusher...Wheaton and McFadden both turned in great performances there, and got me emotionally involved in the moment.

I wish they had had more moments like that throughout the series...an example is "The First Duty" - a great episode, but it focused very heavily on the Wes-Picard relationship, while almost ignoring Wes-Bev, aside from one or two scenes early on.

I've got this photoshopped porn image....

No, never mind.

Thank you. I've already been scarred for life for seeing a Simpsonporn Bart/Lisa pic when I was about eleven years old (much against my will, I assure you).

Then there was the Belle + the Candlesticks Dude erotica from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Some people have too much time on their hands.

Unfortunately, that seems to happen an awful lot with the Wes-Beverly dynamic. It's all about his surrogate fathers a lot of the time.

There're a couple I can think of -

The "old doctors' home" quip in Journey's End is sweet.

Beverly abusing the comm system to tell Wes to get a haircut, much to his mortification always struck me as a very "true" moment.

I agree about The Bonding. It's a lovely scene.

There's a tiny bit in Lonely Among Us where you actually get the impression that this is a family who occasionally talk obout their day.

I'm not talking abou The Game because it's so. very. wrong.

And, of course, there's the bitchslap in Sarek :p
