Graphic Novel Collection “Original” Material

Does anyone here own the last 17 volumes of the Graphic Novel Collection where various never before published stories and tidbits were included? It’s hard to find info on these and I would love to talk with someone who has read them.

Starting with Volume 124 they published Gold Key #62, two Portuguese comics, and various outlines of unpublished or cancelled stories. Anyone have any first hand info on these?

I have them, but I haven’t read them. PM me and I’ll check them out.

It looks like some existing stock is showing up on eBay. Yesterday I was able to order 2 (of the three) issues I was missing. Which was great, although I paid just over $40 each, once shipping was added. But now I’m just ONE issue away from a complete set.

Never mind the PM — here’s what they have:

#124 has the complete script (22 pages) and the first 19 pages of page breakdowns for unpublished Gold Key issue #62.
#125 doesn’t include any previously-unreleased content
#126 has pages of odds & ends, like Happy Meal boxes, audition scripts for the daily comic, and just a ton of other stuff.
#127 has no bonus content.
#128 has the script for “A True Son of Kahless,” including dialog omitted from the comic pages due to a production glitch.
#129 includes a 7-page comic story from Brazil,
#130 has no bonus content
#131 has no bonus content

to be continued

Continued:

#132 has no bonus content
#133 includes two written comic proposals (and some sketches) from Ken Penders that never went any further. One was written (or co-written) by Mark Lenard.
#134 includes the (rare?) Star Trek Infestation sketchbook, but nothing previously unpublished
#135 includes an unused Voyager script by Mangels & Martin.
#136 includes a second, 8 page, Brazilian comic.
#137 includes Chris Cooper’s single-paragraph outlines for unpublished Starfleet Academy issues 20-29.
#138 includes an outline and the first 9 script pages of Andy Mangels’ Return of the Wolf, a TNG story, and material from Mangels and Martin’s Phase 3, set aboard the Akira-class USS Thunderchild. I don’t recall ever hearing of Phase 3 before.
#139 has outlines/scripts for Captain Sulu Adventures by Steven H. Wilson.
#140 has several DS9 pieces by Martin & Mangels: proposals, scripts, and even a bunch of sketched pages. Those guys worked up a ton of material that never got used!

I never got around to unwrapping the last dozen or so issues, so I just discovered one with a binding defect (the cover wasn’t put on straight on #139, although the pages appear intact.) It was fun looking through those!

@Daddy Todd thank you for the info. So the main thing I’m trying to determine is if Gold Key #62 falls into the same category as the Brazilian comics in being a newly available story, or if it would fall into the category of the outlines and proposals in the later volumes?

Specifically is it a released, officially licensed story that deserves to be counted on my count of every Star Trek story ever? An example picture or two would give me an idea of what is presented, if you’d be able to.

Thanks for any more help!

@ryan123450 If I were looking at it, I would put it with outlines & proposals. It's a script and some pages that are divided up, some have dialog balloons, but the art was never actually done. Here's some of the pages: Gold Key Star Trek #62 breakdown (startrekcomics.info)

a review of the script is here: Gold Key STAR TREK Comics - Lost Issue - No. 62 "Trial By Fire" (curtdanhauser.com)

ETA: This reminded I haven't looked at Mark's website (startrekcomics.info) in way too long. It's awesome!

Yeah I use that site for research all the time! So there's nothing "new" presented in the printed volume that's not already online then? Ok.

But I'm correct in understanding that the Brazilian comics are translated into English inside the existing dialogue bubbles?

Well, there are more pages (19) but they all look like the three on startrekcomics.info. So, there's more. But for my money, it doesn't add anything significant to the discussion.

Yes they are. If I had my druthers, I'd prefer them in the original Brazilian Portuguese. But they're translated.

Awesome, thanks @Daddy Todd. That helps me basically set aside the Gold Key story. Though I am interested what exactly the “scripts” or “outlines” consist of, say for the Captain Sulu stories. Are they in a format that tells a complete story, or just a step along the way towards something unfinished? I assume the later, but am interested to know more.

I’ve been looking for several of these on eBay for months, and have only seen them come up once, in a lot that included almost the entire run that ended up selling for $1700.

I would love to be able to read the Brazilian comics somehow.

I’m just guessing, but I expect those later issues will start showing up at retail outlets. I understand someone has bought up the warehouse stock from the late, unlamented Eaglemoss, and it’s just starting to trickle out into the market. In 6 months, we may be drowning in it. Be patient.
