Anyone here read Graham Masterton? I started reading his stuff about 20 years ago. One of my friends leant me his novel, Pariah, and I've been a fan ever since. One of my favourite novels is Family Portrait, which I read about 15 years ago. I never bought it, borrowing it from a friend, and I've just bought it second hand from Amazon - it smells like it's been stuck in a dirty cellar for 20 years!
Masterton really is a talented wordsmith in my opinion and I've got endless time for him. He does two things extremely well - construct and carry a plot, and his narrative is interesting and engaging. True his stuff's a bit pulp horror and sometimes he seems to construct his novels by the numbers (there's always a large-breasted woman, a faithful friend who helps to save the day, and an expert on the particular supernatural event to be tackled who dies horribly after imparting a key bit of info), but who know, what? I studied DH Lawrence in university and I can remember that he endlessly rewrote the same stuff, so literary giants are not exempt.
Anyway, I don't think that Masterton has a UK publishing deal at the moment and the novels of his I've just bought are all with Canadian publishers. It's a shame really that he doesn't have a UK presence any longer.
For years Stephen King and Graham Masterton have been my favourite pals to keep me occupied on long train rides and at the beach.
Any other Graham Masterton fans here?
