Grad Party Theme

I'm throwing a grad party soon and want it to be something special, something my friends and family will remember. 70's, 80's. Hollywood are overdone, I don't want something childish or geeky like superheroes or Star Trek, and i needs to be something that won't have people spending a bunch of money to fit in.

Suggestions?

First, I am assuming this is a college graduation for you. If it is a high school graduation for someone else that may change my opinion a little.

The obvious answer is a luau theme. It's been relentlessly overdone, but it's still fun. Toga party? Might get uncomfortable. My boyfriend suggests "the Roaring Twenties." Or to better fit the times, why not the 30s?

My graduation parties have always just had the basic barbecue theme because it's so nice for the time of year.

It's going to be indoors as I have around 100 people coming. So no barbecue.

The one thing I'm concerned about is this: if I choose a Roaring Twenties theme, does all the dance music have to be from the 20's? It wouldn't seem tacky if it wasn't?

Now that you mentioned the music, I was thinking you could do a "swing" type thing. Or play all jazz or something. If you care a lot about the music then I would choose what you want to listen to first, and fit the theme around that.

And wow, you have a lot of people coming! I don't think I even know 100 people.

Hmm...my "party" after I defend my Ph.D. in June will probably be a long nap. :bolian:
