Grab railing! Duck quickly!

Art Vandelay

Captain
Captain
Each and every time Voyager is under attack, Janeway gets up and positions herself near one of those railings on the bridge.

Then a volley rocks the ship, the crew stumbles, staggers, shuffles, does random stuff.

Janeway, however, does not do that. At every volley, and I do mean every volley, she grabs said railing, quickly ducks and immediately stands up again. The whole thing takes less than a second. She never wavers from that routine, and sometimes - when the battle is fierce enough - she isn't even afraid to duck three times in a row.

At the end of Scorpion, Part I, when she is on that Borg vessel that is under attack from Species 8472, the Borg put her next to - wait for it - a railing. And yes, she even goes for the old ducking trick on a Borg cube.

Three questions:

  1. What's up with that?
  2. Would it make a good drinking game?
  3. Are there any animated GIFs?

I've never noticed it before, but now I'm probably going to see it every damn time. Thanks.

It's her style to be under attack XD But actually it's maybe more safe than just sit in that chair and wait to be thrown to the floor. :D

I think any excuse for a drinking game is acceptable, and I'm all about seeing a gif so I hope someone can find/make one!

PS: her MO is more brave than mine. I'd be cowering under the consoles in the fetal position...

But ducking clearly helps in battle. That way, if something shaves the top of the Bridge off, she'll be totally safe. Maybe she only knows how to do the shaky thing all the Trek actors have to do when she's near a railing?

Everything makes a good drinking game. One sip per duck, one for grabbing railing, whole bottle for falling to the floor because Trek engineers can't be bothered to install seatlbelts? I have no gifs, but perhaps this is one of those things that should be compiled en masse along with Hands on Hips and the DHW.

See, this is one sip quickly followed by finishing the bottle:

Grab railing! (Actually, so's everyone else)

Your railing has failed you!

Well, it takes too much time to fall down and get back up. It's one of those Star Trek things. The producers probably thought "Do we want to be real here, or do we just want to get on with the story?" Often they just want to get on with the story. If they gave us five minutes of shaking camera and people rolling all over the bridge...well, that might be entertaining. I think the cast would crack up laughing after awhile.

And, of course, in the early seasons, the bun of steel remains unruffled.

If you want a novel that explains the loss of the captain's original 'do, check out "The Captain's Table: Fire Ship" by Diane Carey.

I do like that book. I really liked the alien fellows in it. Rarely does someone write aliens to be so nice and adorable.

That Bun of Steel hardly stayed unruffled, though. In fact, it was a better barometer for the ship's status than the alert system.

I guess I'd rather see her do something "routine" than try to think of something new every time. Seems like, in their environment, everyone would have their "braced" position, and in her case it would be a choice between holding onto her seat or getting up and hanging onto the railing.

^ Sure - but why does every volley throw her forward&down, regardless of where it strikes the ship?

Oh, and I've looked at that Youtube clip two dozen times now. The first time all the laughter almost gave me a spleen hernia, if there is such a thing.
