Good Non-American & Non-British TV

Maestro

As our world gets smaller and smaller, I'm finding myself really enjoying a great deal of programming from the British television that is appearing on BBC America and Sci-Fi. I've always enjoyed Dr. Who, and thanks to BBCA, I've been able to see shows like Torchwood, Life on Mars, Robin Hood, and now Ashes to Ashes. My wife is a fan of note within The Tomorrow People fandom, and she's also a fan of the Aussie series H2O.

It's possible for us to get Channel One from Russia on my Dish, as well as broadcasts from China.

So the question becomes, what are some good indiginous programs, sci-fi and otherwise, broadcast on German, French, Russian, etc. TV?

You multi-lingual or something? I can't understand how you can watch this stuff unless you got some digi channel feature that dubs over these shows.

Anyhow I'd recommend

RIS police scientifique (a kind of CSI rip)
Kommissar Rex (Crime again)
Father Ted (Irish Comedy)
Napoléon historical drama
A Japanese animated series called Planetes

There are probably hundreds of Asian historical, thriller and Crouching Tiger style dramas from Korea and China
Here's a site for some Korean shows
http://www.koreanwiz.org/
http://www.soompi.com/
BTW Korea is region 3 dvd

Police Precinct (French) used to be good, as did the Australian cop show Special Squad... The German series Tatort is usually worth a look too.

We're not multi-lingual, and we don't actually have a subscription to either Russian or Chinese TV. We're just curious what else is out there. There is a substantial output of US TV that we simply don't watch, so we're trying to broaden ourselves. As for the translation... well... we'll figure something out.

Father Ted (Irish Comedy)
It may have a predominantly Irish cast and writers, but it's still produced by UK television for UK viewers (Channel 4) - if memory serves me correct the writers never intended to pitch it to RTE and preferred a British company (Hat Trick) to produce it. (Of course, Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews were no strangers to British comedy, as their previous credits included "The Day Today" and "The Fast Show".)

German series I'd recommend:

Dr. Psycho

Probably cancelled after only 2 seasons, this show earned critical acclaim. It's a sort of comedy crime drama about a psychologist with a failed marriage who is supposed to support a team at the CID in Cologne. It's out on DVD, but I don't think they come with subtitles. One of the best German series ever but might not translate well.

Ijon Tichy, Raumpilot

A mini-series based on Stanislaw Lem's The Star Diaries of only 6 episodes. Has very low production values but makes up for it with enormous creativity. It's also out on DVD but without subtitles and everyone speaks with a heavy fake Eastern European accent, so it's probably pretty hard to translate.

Irgendwie und Sowieso

Another mini-series that shows life in provincial Bavaria in 1968. A cult classic. Out on DVD, again without subtitles.

I could also mention Pastewka, a comedy series evolving around the (fictional) life of comedian Bastian Pastewka that allows us a view behind the scenes of the media. 3 seasons, so far (season 3 is pretty weak, though), all out on DVD, again without subtitles. A 4th season is planned. It is supposedly based on Curb Your Enthusiasm (I have never seen it), so it might not be very exotic.

Someone else mentioned Tatort. This is a regular crime drama, that's been on since 1970. Each episode is 90 minutes long, there are several pairs of police investigators in different parts of the country. Each episode concentrates only on one of those pairs. It's a good show to see different parts of Germany and it's pretty straight forward. However, it is a bit hit and miss. Some episodes are really bad, others are really good. New episodes air any other Sunday evening, older episodes are repeated at different times. The former GDR equivalent Polizeiruf 110 is pretty similiar. Other good crime dramas would be Soko Leipzig (takes place in Leipzig) and Wilsberg (a former investigator/now bookdealer investigates in Münster).

I wouldn't mind seeing an episode Soko Leipzig, either dubbed or with subtitles, just once I don't feel I got the measure of the show when its characters appeared on the Bill.

Having a German girlfriend has given me an insight into their TV.
She watches a soap called 'Forbiden Love' which is made by Grundy TV (the guys behind neighbours.:
They have a sho very like Harry Hill's TV Burp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7ECuVhgSYw
They have a great Saturday Night Program on every month that makes Ant and Dec look more lame. The presener is grat even though I don't really know much of what he is saying.
The Wife swap program is very funny, miles better than the one in England.

Well, there are a lot of Anime shows if that's your thing. I've seen some here and there, but have some friends that are really into it.

There is also a nice Sherlcok Holmes series that was made in Russia in the 80's. Some of it was on youtube last I checked with english subs.

That's. Just. WRONG! Fascinating, but wrong. I'm going to have to find a way to obtain a full movie/episode. Looks like the first one is actually available in the US on R1 DVD.

Good News Week
Thank God You're Here
The Adventures of Lano and Woodley
Full Frontal/Fast Forward
Newstopia
The Micaleff P(r)ogram(me)
Southern Hemisphere rugby
NRL

Well, you could always look up some Japanese animation, aside from Trek and other sci-fi that's one my major hobies. Some of my personal favorites are:

Monster (mystery, horror, medical drama)
Planetes (science fiction, drama)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (science fiction, police drama)
Haibane Renmei (mystery, drama, philosophy, psychology)
Black Lagoon (action)
Infinite Ryvius (science fiction, drams, adventure)
Welcome to the NHK (Drama, comedy)
Kurenai (action, drama)
When They Cry-Higurashi (horror, mystery)
Rumbling Hearts (romantic drama)

I'd also recommend a live action Chinese martial arts epic series called Condor Hero made in 2006 which has some gorgeous scenery and tons of sweet wire-fu.

People seem to really in to Korean dramas these days. They air them free with english subtitles on uhf channels in most big cities.

Xun Qin Ji (Step into the Past) was a pretty popular HongKong tv show set around the waring states before China's unification,
another is Legend of Condor Heroes which was popular in the 80s or maybe its just called 'Condor Hero' like Zakkrusz said
you might know the Japanese 'Saiyuki' it was dubbed in English and released as 'Monkey' broadcasting on a local California tv station

There is more than one, a search for opening sequences on Youtube produced 4 seperate series. The one I'm thinking of which is released as Condor Hero by Tai Seng on DVD here in region 1 is this one from 2006. It stars Huang Shao Ming and the gorgeous Liu Yi Fei. There's also the 1983 one you mentioned as well as a 2003 series and lastly another version from last year 2008. It also got an aborted animated series that ran for about 2 seasons on shoestring budget and then got canceled before finishing the story. Whether any of them have any relation to each other or whether they're all separate adaptations I'm not sure. :wtf:

If you haven't seen the 2006 version I'd highly recomend it if for no other reason than to see a more modern update. You should enjoy it if you can get past the terrible subtitling job on the official DVDs and the occasional extremely cheesy looking CGI animal.

Next on my list I think I'll check out The Seven Swordsmen and The Handsome Siblings series for my wire fu needs.

There's lots of excellent TV coming from Japan, especially if you're ok with Anime. German TV in general is total crap, they practically don't produce anything themselves anymore except "unscripted" stuff - reality tv, cooking shows, quiz shows, etc. And from what I can tell, Italian tv consists exclusively of talk/game-show hybrids hosted by near-naked gorgeous women.

is Alarm for Cobra 9 any good? I've seen clips on some 'Europe's Greatest Stunts' show on satellite and I thought it looked cool. well, y'know, the stunts look cool...
