Yeah, it was still an enjoyable film. I wasn't ever really bored by it because the action and visuals made up for the predictable storytelling.

My friend John actually moved to New Zealand for a while to work on it (he's a motion editor and was working for Lightstorm on this), so I can't be too down on the movie since it gave him a relatively long period of work in his field when he needed it badly, and it will look good on his portfolio.

My brother and I usually go to see a movie on Christmas Day — in past years it was a way for Mom to get us out of her hair while she cooked, and more recently it's a way to get away from the awkward tension that always seems to come up during family gatherings now that we're both out on our own.

You know visual effects people?

...will you be my friend?

He's worked on exactly two major films now (Happy Feet and Avatar) so he's not exactly what you would call a titan of the industry. It's been pretty hard for him to find work in his field, so he has to work an average Joe job most of the time.

I have no idea whether theatres are open in the UK on Christmas Day. I would never go in any case. For me, like Spot's Meow upthread, Christmas Day is the ultimate stay-at-home day. I wouldn't want to go out.

As for the Avatar discussion above, the derivative eco/native/save-the-rainforest elements are very much why I can't be bothered to see it. LOL at the "hey, that's Vasquez and Carter Burke" comment, too. :D

If there's a movie that interests me opening, then yeah, I'll go. I don't celebrate Christmas, anyway, so there's little else to do. This year I saw Sherlock Holmes.

^^^ Did you like it?

I'm looking forward to seeing Sherlock Holmes. I'll probably see that on Monday.

It'd never occur to me to go to the cinema on Christmas Day. I don't even know if cinemas are open on Christmas Day. It amazes me when anything is open on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. I think I'm still stuck in the Christmases of my childhood. In the 1970s in the UK nothing was open on Christmas Day, virtually nothing on Boxing Day, and the whole week between Christmas and New Year was pratically shut, too! :)

I think this is my problem too - I just assume everything's closed because it was when I was a kid. I'm still surprised that post offices don't have early closing on Wednesdays any more :)

I hardly go to the movies on any other day of the year, let alone Christmas Day. That day, too, is also a stay at home day, when there's so much great TV on anyway. :guffaw:

NZ is nortoriously hard to get through immigration for that sort of thing, at least if you're from this part of the world. We were always told in school to forget about WETA because to get a work visa you had to have a significant amount of industry experience first, though I imagine it's probably different if it's temporary and you're already employed.

Yeah, he already had the job with Lightstorm (I think they were consulting with WETA early on because Cameron finally felt that Avatar was possible after seeing how well Gollum was fully realized on screen), and he was only planning to live there as long as the job lasted.

I was surprised at how many big chain supermarkets and drugstores(CVS/ Walgreens) were open yesterday. And a few fast food places too. I remember it wasnt too long ago when Christmas day meant nothing was open, so you had to make sure you went out and got anything you needed before the 25th!

I wish more places had been open yesterday. I was really craving some Wendy's late at night.

My story is almost exactly the same, only there's two brothers and sometimes we drag our mom with us.

I'm not shocked that movie theaters are open, but I am shocked that anyone would actually want to leave the house on Christmas day. It is the ultimate lounge around in your pajamas playing board games, video games, and watching DVDs day. I can't imagine getting dressed let alone going out in public.

This is the way it was, although in the past few years we've been going back to my in-laws for dinner on Christmas Day. This year we went to my parents' house after, because even though they don't celebrate it, my aunt and uncle and cousins all had free time to come up too.

We had so much fun ... doing puzzles, watching eps of DS9, playing new games, staying up late and munching on food ... all in pajamas. It's the coziest thing in the world.
