News Glen Campbell Dies

Saw him once on the Carson show. He said he had a joke but he probably shouldn't tell it. Carson told him to go ahead and if was that bad they'd just bleep it out. He told the joke and they censored the PUNCHLINE! You know that at that moment that what you were thinking about the NBC censor was much worse than ANYTHING that would going to come out of Glen Campbell's mouth. (Finally heard the rest of the joke years later. A poor family asked their kid what he wanted for Christmas. He said something he could wear and something he could play with. They only had enough for one present so they got him a pair of pants with the pocket linings cut out.)

No longer shackled by forgotten words and bonds.

Glen Campbell - Rhinestone Cowboy

I've always loved this song.

For whatever reason, I thought he died sometime last year. When I opened this thread I fully expected it to have been bumped for some additional information like a posthumus album release.

Anyway, sorry to hear that he has passed away. He was a hard artist to categorize. His vocals were country sounding but he could play anything and did when he was a session guitarist.

Yeah, his versions of Whichita Lineman, Gentle on My Mind, Galveston, all great songs performed beautifully. RIP

He's been battling Alzheimer's for a while which might be why you were thinking that.

Also from December 1964-April 1965 he filled in on tour for the Beach Boys when Brian Wilson stopped touring (he took over Brian's bass and vocals). But he had also been part of The Wrecking Crew on a number of Beach Boys tracks and other artist tracks.

When I was a kid in the '70s he was BIG, but I missed the time in the '60s when he was HUGE, with his own TV show and everything. He was given a lead role in a major movie with basically no experience, and later he used to say something like "Before I made True Grit I had never acted in a movie, and afterward I can still say I have never acted in a movie."

He was a great guitarist and singer, and even though Jimmy Webb wrote his breakthrough hits, did he ever put his own stamp on them. That six-string bass solo on "Wichita Lineman"... brilliant, I can imagine that just grabbing you from the radio in 1968. (I know some say Carol Kaye played it, but she herself has said that it was her bass but Campbell played the solo).

I have been watching episodes of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on Shout! TV, and it is hugely entertaining as a time capsule.

RIP, and thanks for the music.

Thank Goodness. He was suffering horribly. I'll fondly remember the "Rhinestone Finger" segment on the Donny and Marie show from the late '70s.

Same here, until I realized I had remembered his induction into the hall of fame, and I think at the time, it was stated to be his last public appearance.

I was also a big fan. As a musician I also played many of his songs. His voice and his talent will be missed.
