Glee 1.19 - "Dream On"; Joss Whedon, Neil Patrick Harris

Too bad that Whedon has said he won't be back (because the process of directing it spoiled him too much on the details of other episodes, and this is his favourite show), because he did really good work here. Even though he didn't write the episode, you could see his touch in the way some of the dialogue was delivered (wouldn't be surprised if some of it was written with him in mind).

It was actually a while in before we got a musical number, but all the ones this week were good; I'm kind of annoyed that they didn't record a full version of "Piano Man" to sell, because I would totally buy that. The duet version of "Dream On" was fantastic.

And amazing, Tina actually spoke - several times! Though apparently this required so much effort as to render virtually all the other New Directions kids mute (by my count, Kurt, Quinn, Mercedes, Finn, Puck, Santana, and Brittany all had either one line or no lines at all; I need my Brittany one-liners to sustain me through the week).

Now THIS is a man who takes 'spoilers' seriously! I've seen people complain about them online, but never someone turn down a job because of them.

Agreed. Had I been the director: I would have had them both play the role at the same time (turning every song into a duet). It would be a massive hit.

Having to choose between the two, though: I would have given the part to Neil Patrick Harris. I prefer his voice.

I did find it kind of funny for NPH's character to be telling the whole choir room that most/all of their showbiz dreams wouldn't come true - a realistic message in this sort of situation, mind you - given that this room is actually full of people whose showbiz dreams did come true, almost all of them as a result of this show.

TINA EXISTS!!!!!

Who knew. I thought she was almost becoming half the characters on Voyager and Enterprise, there for the eye candy "yes sir no sir" and nothing else. She actually had an episode for a change, and I still like her. Hopefully they give her another solo/song before the season is over though. Still like her rendition of True Colors.

Great episode tonight, even though it seemed a bit too disney for me. I guess it's the whole mantra of "Dreams coming true" and "When you wish upon a star" that reminded me of the whole Disney thing, but I like better episodes this season like the last two weeks. Still, Everyone seems to really like Whedon and he did a good job directing here. I'm not really into the whole "who directs what" and the individual style, so when I read this thread and saw a quote about having Whedon's dialogue into the show, I thought they were all going to start talking western and Mal Reynolds like.

I called the bit about Rachael's mother at the beginning of the episode, but I'm interested to see where this goes. I'm glad they didn't use Jesse as a way to bring down the club (Or at least that's the inkling I got) but we'll see.

As for the music, not bad this week. Dream On might be better than the Aerosmith version (Is it me, or are Aerosmith covers better than the originals because they don't have the patented Steven Tyler scream?), and Arties dream number was great too.

I still can't believe they had an episode featuring Tina. The way it was going, we couldn't even buy something like that.

One more thing, I hope Harris becomes a recurring character. Granted, he has a show on a competing network, but he was too good here to not be used again.

^My friend and I called Rachel's mother back when she first appeared. Been wondering if Artie's dream sequence was actually done as a flash mob. It looked like it.

Did anyone else catch a glimpse of Nathan Fillion in Artie's flashmob dream sequence? Not dancing, just watching.

Was the whole Rachael's mom thing mentioned before this week's episode? Probably why I didn't give it much thought until then.

Had no idea that Idina Menzel's character was Rachel's mom. They look almost exactly alike and I didn't pick up on it.

Just a few things.

1. I still don't get what people see in Joss Whedon. The direction of this episode was pretty crappy, especially the force-it-down-your-throat flash mob scene. "Look, see, we're filming people filming it for YouTube! And you're supposed to not realize it was all a dream sequence, no matter how stupid it is that Artie is not only standing but instantly dancing the day after reading about the treatments! Ooh, I'm so clever!" Ugh.

2. While I adore Neil Patrick Harris, his character is incredibly lame. What, is he 3 years old or something? "Oh, I can sing! Yay! Here everyone, jean jackets! Wait, what? I didn't get the part?! GIMME THOSE JACKETS BACK! <stomp stomp stomp>"

3. I don't think Joss's direction really drove home the fact that Will is going to pay the price for bribing NPH's character. Or that he did, in fact, bribe him. We really needed to be shown three times (first with the actual bribe, two by NPH asking if he was indeed bribed, then with Will telling the whole class that he bribed him). Because, you know, we're all too stupid to realize it on our own. But hey, how can he show how brilliant his Chekov's gun is if he doesn't put tons of focus on how cunning it is? Double ugh.

4. I love that Idina Menzel is Rachel's mom. I mean, I remember her from earlier in the season but it just didn't dawn on me who she was or how similar she looked to Rachel. Even looking back, they seemed to really play with her make-up or something to conceal the fact. Pretty cool.

5. Sue continues to tickle me. I love that character so damn much. "Just like Letterman." Hahaha.

I disagree that that's meant to be setup. The first two times are really one time, and part of a joke: it looks like a weighty discussion, then Harris cheerfully accepts the bribe and leaves.

The third one is about the class realizing how much Schue wants them to succeed (look at Brittany's brief reaction-shot).

I doubt there was anyone who thought Artie was actually dancing...

and NPH was just playing his "character". He was acting no different than Barney Stinson or himself from Harold and Kumar after the first act.

Most of these are writing issues, not directing.
