Gillan cast as Jean Shrimpton in TV movie

Now that Matt Smith has had his solo biopic, now it's Karen Gillan's turn, as BBC Four has announced she'll be starring in We'll Take Manhattan, a film about 1960s supermodel Jean Shrimpton:

There'll probably be some fear and loathing over the fact filming starts in May as to whether that means anything for Karen on Doctor Who, but I think that's when production of Doctor Who is on break anyway. And with the split season it's hard to figure out what the show's production schedule is going to be this year anyway, so unless we hear something in the interim or something obvious happens at the end of the first half, I wouldn't read too much into it. Now if she'd been signed to another TV series that would be a different thing. We'll probably see Matt Smith doing something else, too during the break, just as he did with making the Christopher Isherwood movie.

These look to be month or two shoots. With the WHO shooting schedule, they can be done during breaks, if they want. If they want, well that's another story.

I'm really glad to see Gillan getting more work and getting appreciation beyond Who. But it's also really sad to think of her leaving the show, more even I think than Smith.

I doubt she would stay after this season and its a pity because it would be nice to have one cast for a Doctor era instead of changing it. I only see Smith staying for one more season.

Oh? Why do you think this?

I'd be happy to see him stay for several more years. He certainly has youth on his side. He could potentially stay longer than Tom Baker.

Then again, three years seems to be about average for the others, TB and PM, not counting.

On the upside, whether she's back in 2012 DW or not, she's fully nude in the Shrimpton thing...

It's a virtual certainty that she's not back for 2012.
Says who?
I'm going by the fact that she has two big projects lined up -- a BBC television movie and a theatrical movie -- for after Who finishes filming. I think that's a pretty good indication that she's not back when filming resumes on Who in July.

That doesn't mean anything. Films can be shot in 2 weeks. This isn't like she's being signed up for Lord of the Rings where she's committed for a year. With the split season the production schedule is different than past years, PLUS, with Doctor Who relocating to a new studio in 2012, as announced by the BBC last year, and reports that the split-season format may become permanent, there's nothing to indicate that just because she (or Matt) get involved in another project that it means they have to leave the current one. Moffat isn't leaving Doctor Who just because he has to do season 2 of Sherlock, either.

Now I will agree that precedent dating back to 1963 is against Karen staying for a third season. But until the current season plays out we won't know.

Hell, even if they announce that she's been signed to a new TV series, that doesn't mean anything. Chris Barrie starred in both Red Dwarf and Brittas Empire at the same time for years, and several members of the cast of the long-running Canadian sitcom Corner Gas appeared concurrently in a second show called Robson Arms. It's one of the benefits of doing series that don't go for 22-25 episodes.

A theatrical film can't be shot in two weeks, and it's a little bit of an exaggeration to say that a television film can be shot in two weeks, more like a month or two more likely depending on the schedule. It will be interesting to see how the production works around this or see if they even do.

Karen has a nude scene?

it is good casting, as for Amys future, its possible she could take some time away from the TARDIS, and come back. look at what happend with Marth after she "left" at the end of S3.

From what I remember reading BBC4 films are turned around pretty quickly because they are made for tuppence and can't afford long shoots.

between Doctor Who (5) & Torchwood (3*) Martha was in the Whoverse a fair amount that year.

I dont know if Moff would allow it, but if he wanted to keep the dream team together a little bit longer, Amy could take a mid series break, the idea of a "lost companion" the Doctor (& Rory) have to find could be interesting.

* 4 if you count Lost Souls.

A theatrical film can't be shot in two weeks

Most certainly can. Most aren't of course, but that doesn't mean anything. Pre-production and post-production almost always take longer than the actual filming does, but you don't need any of the actors for those.

and it's a little bit of an exaggeration to say that a television film can be shot in two weeks, more like a month or two more likely depending on the schedule.

My comment is even more true for TV movies than theatrical films.

Seriously? Don't tease me about things like that, I couldn't take the disappointment if it turns out not to be true.

And why has no-one else gleefully seized on this yet?!
