TrekMovie just put this up a short while ago:

We have heard about the toys, the book the comic prequel and lots of other merchandising, and today the final piece of the multimedia event of the new Star Trek is now official. The Michael Giacchino sountrack for the film is now available for pre-order at Amazon. TrekMovie has that and more details below.
Follow the link for the rest of the article.

I was really hoping it would be out earlier than that. Oh well. I wonder if Paramount will launch a separate site for the soundtrack maybe with some previews.

May 5th is earlier than I thought...I wonder if they're even going to bother releasing the track list closer to May?

Still hoping to hear some version of Alexander Courage's classic in the score somewhere.

I read somewhere (I can't remember exactly where, but it might have been on trekmovie.com) that the main title will indeed be Michael Giacchino's take on Alexander Courage's classic intro... so there is hope!

A few things to bear in mind about that:

  • That article is dated 1 November of 2007, at which time Giacchino wouldn't have begun more than a few preliminary sketches, if that much. The composer is typically the last person to begin work.
  • It doesn't state that the Courage music will be part of the main title theme, only that he intended to hang onto the signature music from the original series' opening theme.
  • SciFi Wire are the same folks who stuffed up the Ellison rumor a week or so back with sloppy fact-checking, and ought to be taken with a grain of salt.
That said, I'd be very surprised if we didn't hear the Courage fanfare somewhere before the movie's end. How it ends up being woven in will be something I look forward to hearing.

The only 2 times I recall the actual Courage MAIN theme being used were during a Captain's Log scene in TMP and the end of the closing scene in TSFS. I love Goldsmith's TMP score but throwing in that by-the-numbers original main theme was the only thing I didn't like; it seemed out of place and didn't match (and wasn't integrated into) the rest of the music. The usage at the end of TSFS, h/e, seemed to fit much more fluidly into Horner's original music.

The Original Series theme, actually, suited TMP very well, and was used 3 times in the movie.

It was actually arranged by Alexander Courage himself, who was orchestrating and working with Jerry Goldsimth on the movie.

Sandy Courage also arranged the suite of TV themes Jerry Goldsmith used to perform in his concerts, and worked with him often.

Max Steiner also arranged Goldsmith's thematic material for a couple of cues in the movie.

I'm just now listening to Giacchino's soundtrack for Secret Weapons over Normandy; the few doubts I had are gone... he really can write epic music.
