Ghostly Singing + Dead Writer = Giggling Newsreader

Zulu Romeo

World Famous Starship Captain

God bless you, Charlotte Green!

BBC Radio 4 newsreader Charlotte Green [ - ZR] got a fit of the giggles on the Today Programme, while reporting news of the discovery of the world's oldest recorded human voice, following this up with the announcement of the death of screenwriter Abby Mann.

Apparently her outburst had generated lots of positive feedback from the listeners, and has made headline news here in the UK (OK, it's more along the lines of the "And finally..." slot featuring the usual likes of skateboarding badgers and extreme ironing).

I guess it happens to the best of us.

:guffaw:

Oh, quite. Charlotte Green is teh hotness on Radio 4. :bolian: She was always prone to giggles, particularly whenever she read out the amusing cuttings and clippings on "The News Quiz".

Back in the early radio days of "Dead Ringers" (before they moved to TV) Jan Ravens did a perfect impersonation of her too.

Meh, maybe I'm too old to get it, I just thought it was unprofessional. Mind you, in her defece I think there was some idiot in the studio deliberately trying to get her to laugh.

I think it was an in-studio comment by another person which was supposed to have set her off.

Having done a little of that sort of thing (live radio), I can assure you that laughing fits aren't the sort of thing one plans to do; they're just something which happens, and you cope with it the best you can. You can hear her in the clip trying to pull it together (that's the professional, show-must-go-on ethic,) but when you're live, you're sort of naked up there, and stopping once it's started is far easier said than done. I'm sure you've heard recordings of other instances of people losing it in live situations -- there's a very famous one of Elvis coming unglued during a performance, and you really should look up the Gary Owens "Preparation H" incident if you haven't heard it.

And trying to play the "old" card? Pffft!
