Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty has died at the age of 63 after suffering a long illness.

His career high came in the 1970s and included the anthemic Baker Street and Stuck in the Middle with You, recorded with his band Stealers Wheel.

Rafferty had battled a drink problem and spent time in hospital in Bournemouth with liver failure.

He was born in Paisley and began his musical career as a busker on the London Underground.

Rafferty died peacefully at home, with his daughter Martha at his bedside.

Scotland has lost a pop legend. "Baker Street" was one of the all-time great records - it was a permanent fixture on one of my mix tapes when I was younger, and was also on the very first mix tape my uncle gave me when I was 5.

The man will be missed. :(

Stuck in the Middle with You was one of the great songs of my teens, one of my lifetracks, I'd say, and Baker St was a great too, great, great guitar solo at the end.

Oh, man. I was listening to "Baker Street" yesterday. I love that song, and Gerry really made it work. Great body of work has been left behind and he'll be remembered, though, and so all I can really say is rest in peace and Godspeed, Gerry, and my condolences to his family and friends.

Baker Street is one of "those" songs that takes you right back to the age you were when you first heard it.

RIP.

Yep. I had somehow missed it through all the years I listened to music, until about 1995, when I started high school. I got to hear it in the car, over the radio, on the morning of my first day of high school. Never forgot it, either. There's just something about it that makes it stay with you. The lyrics, the melody, the saxophone, whatever it was, great music.

I''d forgotten how much I loved the song Stuck In The Middle With You, by Stealer's Wheel. It's been years since I listened to terrestrial radio.

Every time I hear "Right Down the Line" ("Woo-mon..") my mind immediately goes back to '78-'79 and the roller skating rink, the lights, the color of the carpet, the smell from the snack bar, all of it.

"Baker Street" was said to have caused a boom in saxophone sales, and rightfully so. But it has always been the keening notes going into the guitar solo that kind of gave me chills. I don't know much about his body of work, but he made some wonderfully crafted and evocative singles. RIP.
