Germans and neighbours: Ehec?

P.S. Just reading the thing with Russia and can´t help but laugh. Not because its a laughing-matter, it isn´t, but because little bacteria have such effects. The true rulers of the world really are bacteria. They not only can make people sick and kill them, they can also let the markets fall apart, ruin firms and lead whole countries into arguments with each other.

Russia's response makes me think though... If the spread of this germ does gain momentum over the coming weeks, it has the potential to cause havoc with food prices, as well as posing a threat to human health.

...

I'm going shopping tomorrow. :shifty:

I think this is an overreaction of the highest order. While there are a number of cases outside of Germany, all of them have been to the country recently and got infected there. It's been going on for a week and the infection area is still confined to Northern Germany. Whatever it is that's causing this has something to do with that region (although it doesn't necessarily follow that it originated there, it could also travel along a supply chain).

Isn't it enough that we get hysterical, like we always do? I read somewhere that in a recent poll conducted in Germany, 50% said they had changed their dietary habits and wouldn't eat lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers anymore. Go us. Oh well, we'll probably end up paying for this mess, anyway.

By the way, you know who really struck me as totally useless? The EU health commissioner John Dalli. Yesterday, he urged Germany to find the source of the outbreak and to stop it. What does he think we're doing? Very helpful, stating the obvious.

But when you do find and stop it, he'll be able to take credit, yes?

If he really went so far as to state something like, "See, I told you so. You only needed to find the source and stop the outbreak" it would at least be hilarious.

Well, he can't really do much but needed to make some statement, I suppose.

Well hes a politician what did you expect. Something along the lines of the EU Heath commission will lend any aid it can to Germany and other EU nations to track down the source of this outbreak?

And I don't think Spain will be able to claim comepensation either, I don't recall the UK being able to when it's Beef was banned because of BSE.

Actually, it seems the EU will recompense those farmers that have been affected by this, not just in Spain. A lot of farms are losing money because no one's buying their produce anymore.

Also, it seems the sprouts lead couldn't be affirmed, so far. The German Minister of Health already urged caution yesterday that it might not be the source. Then again, he seems to be a bit out of the picture on this. All in all, the crisis management could have been better, it seems.

Spain wasn't to blame though. UK was with BSE but Spain isn't with this e coli so they should be able to claim compensation because of this.

I saw on Sky News last light, how sales of salad crops in Europe have almost halved, causing a massive surplus in unsold produce. I find it sad that so much food ends up going to waste. It's one thing I feel quite strongly about.

Tomatoes for example can be chopped and canned. Even if they're not normal canning tomatoes. It's sure better than dumping them. I'd be happy to buy them.

Well, as far as I know, tons of food get dumped every year, anyway, to keep the prices at a level that makes it worthwhile to farm. It's not as bad as it used to be, but still. I agree that it's the most visible symbol of this overabundance economy we have. I'm often disgusted by its outbursts, myself, e.g. the dirt cheap nic nac made from plastics that everyone's throwing away after getting them, anyway.
