Germans and neighbours: Ehec?

Is it just the media who likes to make more fuss and panic about things anyway or are you truly worried because of Ehec/ HUS?

I am somewhat unsure. Have a very sensitive digestive system anyway and as a vegetarian I normally eat of course lots of veggies, also raw, but by now I reduced eating veggies and if than cooked.
The symtoms of Ehec do sound rather unpleasent and HUS can be deadly after all, so guess too much caution is better than none, eh? Though for how long?

And can Spain really claim compensation of Germany for this?

It's actually written in all caps, EHEC, because it's an abbreviation. ;)
I'm not worried, I sort of missed the panic train, apparently. But then again, I'm not in the North. The salad bar at the canteen was suspiciously empty these last few days, though. I always keep forgetting we shouldn't eat tomatoes and do it, anyway.

I only eat unhealthy food, loads of meat and rarely any salad.

So no, not worried in the slightest

:p Not here, there its Ehec: http://www.zeit.de/index
But however its written, would you be worried, if you were in the North (like me)?

Oh I so love tomatoes!!! I was just about to eat a nice salad with tomatoes and cucumber, when sitting down at the computer a week or so ago and reading: Do NOT eat salad, tomatoes and cucumber! So I just stared at my dinner with rumbling stomage and didn´t know what to do! I ate it in the end, but with a bad feeling!

Yes, a lot of newspapers write it that way. Oh well, can't be helped.

Mmh, now that we know about the cucumbers of deathly vengeance, I wouldn't eat cucumbers - though I hardly ever eat them, anyway. I'd continue eating everything else. But again, I hardly ever eat lettuce, anyway. As you can see, I'm a very opinonated vegan. It's complicated with me. :)

How did that come about?

Here, it's known as VTEC (VerocytoToksin-producing E. Coli).

Oh, and: this surely is The Revenge of the Cucumbers ... Back in the day the EEC(!) decreed that cucumbers should be straight -apparently they won't :p

It is the Enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli.

ETA: too slow.

I never heard of either EHEC or HUS until now. Must be a European thing.

It's the biggest outbreak in Europe ever, I think. Otherwise, it's apparently rather rare, especially HUS. I hadn't heard about it, either.

I have been warned against produce from the continent because of e coli, and I usually do eat this stuff; like fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and such, and I have, since being warned about this the day before yesterday; I have refrained from eating such foods, because of it.

Yup and they said in the media that in a week as many got sick as they normally do in a year and many more than usual develop HUS. Though of the ones who have died till now most were elderly people, who were weak before, but also some younger ones.

People dieing is always scary stuff, but there are measures you can do to assure you're okay :); Like avoid the food group and go for suplliments; or if you still want your fresh salad, buy something with pesticides sprayed on and rinse extra thoroughly because of them before eating; as I heard that only Organic produce poses the risk.

No, they found it on organic and non-organic vegetables... well at least for cucumbers I read that.

Thankfully the British produce is in season so I'm covered. I got some lovely organic vine tomatoes from Sainsbury's the other day and had a few tonight with homemade tahini sauce: simply wonderful.

This outbreak on the other hand sounds simply awful.
