George Martin dead at 90

We keep losing all of the great ones, and now we've lost Sir George Martin too; sad times all around, especially when losing one of the greatest record producers ever.

Rest in peace, George, and tell John, George, Mal (Evans) and countless others hello for us.

Martin added so much to the Beatles that he really does deserve to be considered the fifth Beatle. One of my favorite (and there are many) George Martin additions is the harpsichord to the brilliant "In My Life." RIP George.

This one does double duty, as the weather here took a turn for the gorgeous today:

Yeah, the Beatles' infamous lawyers are really cracking down on YouTube videos of the original studio versions these days. My first impulse upon hearing the news this morning was to post the Abbey Road version of this one, but all I could find were covers and live performances. Given that choice, I guess I'll have to let Sir Paul do the honors:

Sir George Martin always seemed so matter of fact and down to earth in his many documentary appearances, he almost seemed like a regular guy explaining any ordinary job, rather than someone trying to explain pure genius. His brilliant influence will continue to resound to me like the unforgettable piano chord at the end of "A Day in the Life." Very sorry to see him go.
