George and Winona Kirk

dougkeenan

Commander
Red Shirt
Why is George willing to sacrifice himself for their son but Winona isn't? (That opening is worth the price of four admissions alone.) But it was disappointing that young James' mother went off to space leaving him to druncle. Does the novelization mention why?

Winona was giving birth. If she dies for her son, her son dies. BTW the CGI eyes on the alien doctor that delivered Jim bugged me.

On the >> NOKIA << druncle says something like, "Your mom's in space and can't save you now." I was wondering why she would put young James in that position after her husband flew to his death protecting them. Something she's got to do that's so important?

^ Precisely. She wouldn't sacrifice her career for their son.

Maybe she had to fly to Tarsus to claim remains or something.

He could have just been staying with him for the summer. Winona could have just been gone for a week. It's never explicitly stated.

Spock's mother was very proud of her son. It's explicitly stated.

Spock should have retorted same to Kirk. "Well at least my mother loved me."

All they said was that she was "off-planet." She could've just been on a trip or something. It wasn't clear.

One thing that did bug me was where was Kirk's older brother Sam? I assume he wasn't on the ship in the begining since no one mentioned him, but you'd think there would have been some mention of him.

Maybe the hitchhiking boy ... ? James calls to the kid but I don't recall if the name was Sam or not.

Hey - Winona could have a baby daddy plan here. "Sam? Your father died attacking the Klingons. James? Your daddy died attacking the Romulans. Oh look at the time! I'm due to board ship trying for a sister ..."

Sam was probably standing next to Greg Grunberg while he bitched at Jim over the phone. No doubt shaking his head at the antics of his impulsive younger brother.

Yeah, it certainly sounded like a trip or something. His uncle said "While your mother's off planet..."

I mean, that COULD mean "for the next 4 years" but saying it that ways tends to make it sound like a short trip to me.

OMG where was Sam?? Hey maybe he had a different mother. That's possible.

I'm pretty sure the uncle said she was "off-world", but hopefully I'm seeing it again tonight.

I expected that hitchhiking boy to turn into someone we knew.

The guy on the phone is Kirk's stepfather, not his "drunk uncle." He says as much. What he says about Winona is "you think you can get away with this just because your Mom is off-planet?" That suggests that Jimmy is used to his mother being around; her absence during that scene may be as simple as her visiting someone for a while on the Moon or something.
