Genre Oscars?

It really annoys me that a lot of Sci Fi/Fantasy films get snubbed every year by the Oscars. What if there was a special Oscar-Like ceremony where the likes of Red, Tron Legacy, or any other genre movie could be a best picture nom? For Tron Legacy to not even be nominated for special effects is outrageous! I mean Hereafter? That movie came and went without a whimper! Do they do that as a sign of smugness, or what? Hereafter's sfx are very similar to Inception, which did it far superior.

On a side note, I am suprised by Inception's Best Picture nom. That's my pick for the win!

Why dont they broadcast that as a show ona major network? And Gaith, my point was made in the next sentence. lol You just wanted to use that pic didn't you? :) The effects of Hereafter were almost identical to that of Inception(albiet inferior). Tron was a unique blend of CGI and live action, It was the only movie of the year to do that. Inception was superior to Hereafter in terms of FX(Story, acting etc). So why pick a movie below standards for an Oscar?

Inception was nominated for and will doubtless win the special effects Oscar, so that's irrelevant to your point that Tron shouldn't have gotten Hereafter's slot. I haven't seen Hereafter, so I can't comment on how its effect stand up to Tron's, but either one's cultural/commercial weight ("That movie came and went without a whimper!") is also besides the point.

(And remember, this is the same Academy that failed to nominate The Matrix Freakin' Reloaded for an FX Oscar. Just sayin'.)
 
There are two genre films nominated for best picture this year--Inception, and Black Swan. Natalie Portman is nominated for Best Actress for a genre film. Aronofsky is nominated for best director. Inception is nominated for Best Original Screenplay. I'd say genre films did pretty well this year.
 
The Oscars are, by definition, a haven for more stuffy, high-class movies, rather than the less 'prestigious' genre flicks. Lately, they've been a little more open to recognizing genre pieces, though.

They gave "Star Trek" best make-up (not the most important award, but it's still an honor for a movie like that to even get a nomination, much less an award).

Also, I heard there was a horror movie montage last year, they gave renowned schlockmeister Roger Corman a lifetime achievement award, and District 9 was even nominated for best picture (in large part because of the ten nominees thing, but it's still surprising).

They're only willing to go so far, though. You can't expect them to nominate genre stuff as shallow as "Red" or "Tron: Legacy". If a genre movie is going to get Oscar nominations, it has to be really top of the line, exceptionally well-made for the genre.

Also, how is "Black Swan" a genre film? It may have got a major release, but I think at its core (like all Aronofsky movies), it's a glorified arthouse movie.

It's horror for horror's sake; the protagonist is partly crazy, so the movie gets free rein to be as silly as it likes, thus making it at least as much fantasy as drama. Best Picture winners tend to be more grounded.

I believe Children of Men was up for Best Adaptation a couple years ago. That said, isn't there a Hugo award or something? ;)

Indeed. Traditionally, genre films have to settle for a Makeup or Special Effects nomination. But things have been loosening up in recent years.

When I was growing up, the idea that a fantasy flick like THE LORD OF THE RINGS could win Best Picture would have been inconceivable . . . .

Interesting choice of words, since The Princess Bride was completely snubbed, IIRC. ;)
