Gene's 90th

I must be crazy but I was surprised that I didn't find any thread or post commemorating the birthday of Gene Roddenberry! He would have been 90 on August 19th, 2011. It was also the birthday of Jonathan Frakes.

I just realized this tonight, and its August 20th now. Surely SOMEONE here must have started a thread about it... Right?

That's not all. it was also the birthday of Diana Muldar (Pulaski).

August 19th was good to Star Trek.

It didn't surprise me that no one on this BBS recognized Gene's Birthday. Most of the group that hangs around here these days have bastardized him without ever knowing anything about the man.

I also had the opportunity to meet Roddenberry on a few occassions and I do agree with you cblmc1296 that he was one of the nicest, gentlest men I have ever met.

So to Gene (and also Majel, because I know she's up there right by your side) have a wonderful 90th birthday. I regret that I never had the opportunity to work with you, for you are one of the my heroes for your vision, understanding and your compassion. I may not have been able to learn anything directly from you while you were here on Earth working on Star Trek, but I do sincerely hope you will teach me your ways when I make it up to heaven to join you.

Best Wishes!

very well said. people just love to hate. i don't care if he wasn't a saint, no one is. his show kicked ass though and i'm thankful for his existence

I don't know much about Gene Roddenberry's bad ideas. I do know that we owe Star Trek to him, so he has my utter gratitude, respect and admiration. :bolian:

It's kind of telling that on the biggest and most well respected star trek forum on the internet, with thousands of active members, nobody even made a mention of the 90th birthday of Roddenberry, 60th birthday of Frakes, or 73rd birthday of Muldar. Old school trek fandom must really be in decline. All good things...

A man with one great idea and (sadly) so many bad ones.

Actually, I'd say he captured lightning in a bottle twice. I also think, with the proper development and studio support, Genesis II and The Questor Tapes could have been excellent.

Well, there's a good reason nobody mentioned Frakes' 60th birthday, that's not until next year.

In like a lion and out like a lamb. The way in is the way out. When you leave for work, check it out. it's the same door that you come back into. Is it any wonder why you never get anywhere in life. Gene's wish would probably be that people plug in and tune out, especially to fates much worse than death, like say the current state the franchise is in.
