The TNG relaunch novel Takedown deals with a one off TNG alien race, if you aren't aware of who it is, I won't say. It's a good book so I highly recommend it, and it is fairly stand alone so it shouldn't be to hard to just jump right into, as long as you are aware that a lot has changed for the characters since we last saw them on screen.
