Generations Overture

I just wanted to post a thread to voice my appreciation of the Star Trek Generations soundtrack. I think it's a great CD, and the Generations overture is a magnificent piece of music.

Regardless of what people think of the movie (although I enjoyed it), I think everyone can appreciate the magnificent Generations overture. It's bold, it's glorious and it's a fitting theme to connect one generation of Star Trek to the next.

I don't care for it. Too melodramatic and overdone.
Sounds like Archer's theme from ENT. Similarly trying too hard, as I find most of McCarthy's work. Just my opinion.

when i saw Prometheus i thought the opening score sounded like Generations

I'm with you. I loved it. That and the opening sequence track. Loved. And what can I say, I'm also a fan of Archer's Theme and the theme from DS9.

Yes, the Generations score is massively underappreciated. I highly recommend the GNP Crescendo expanded edition from 2012 if you can still get hold of it.

It's still available from GNP and other outlets. And I also feel the Generations score is very under appreciated. It's a very good piece of work by McCarthy and full of mysticism and heart. Plus some great action riffs. I was thrilled when this got an expansion.

Awesome stuff.

I've always found the overture extremely similar to his Deep Space 9 theme. It even directly quotes a few phrases, at least to my ear.

That wouldn't be that suprusing given that it's the same composer. Sometimes when listening to peices of music by the same composer you can hear similar elements but perhaps that's just my mind playing tricks on me.

They are very similar but the melodies are different.

I don't know if this is so much of a slight McCarthy because, from my understanding, he was always under very strict guidelines.

But the point still stands: GEN score is really the same 90s TV mediocrity with a movie budget.

I'm like Pavlov's dog. I am immediately filled with disgust when I hear the music. The movie was that bad (and it's still not the worst TNG movie).
