Generations HD on tonight......

Borjis

Commodore

Funny thing happened.

I pulled out my non-anamorphic (cringe) Generations DVD and started watching it yesterday, (just the first few minutes) then I decided to come on the BBS and watch it tuesday (today) instead.

I'm flipping through the channel guide and what do I see??

Star Trek: Generations, Cinemax HD 10pm pacific.

DVR is programmed!

UPDATE:

It looks really sharp and original aspect ratio as well.

there's a fair amount of dust and dirt specs throughout.

I can't complain though, looks way better than my dvd.

It will be shown many more times on Cinemax HD until October 31.

Was the picture a little more stable? On my SD dvd's I notice a lot of "shimmering" for lack of a better word. Rather than being sharp certain borders and writing had this weird glow or shine to them. I'm probably not explaining myself correctly but hopefully somebody will know what I'm talking about and put it into better words.

As Paramount haven't to the best of my knowledge produced an HD copy of any of the Trek films, at least not for public consumption, wouldn't this showing of Generations in HD just be the standard def version upscaled to 1080? ie just the same as watching the SD DVD through a DVD upscaler.

I've seen all of them in HD except TMP and TUC.

My job/trade is HD post production.

They are all absolutely HD transfers from 35mm film prints.
The sharpness, (ability to read fine print on displays for example and the credits) as well as grain structure are very apparent.

They had to at least of done a quick 1080i transfer to D5 tape some years ago.

Dirt, dust and white specs (film rot) are present in all of them. And of course slight mpeg2 artifacts/compression that is characteristic of Cable transmission. The restorations in process for blu-ray release later on will all be much cleaner and have nicer contrast I'm sure.

I don't see the shimmering the previous poster mentioned. Do you have the anamorphic re-issue of generations or the original non-anamorphic disc? Thats the one I have and it looks pretty bad.

Generations looks GREAT in HD. I've seen TMP Theatrical Cut, TWOK Director's Cut, Generations, First Contact and Insurrection in HD. All of them look excellent. The only thing that could be updated in Generations is the explosion of the BoP and perhaps have the Enterprise do something during the battle?

From the other movies the only thing that needs to be updated would be a TMP Director's Cut in HD and maybe the Genesis planet in TWOK to make it look more realistic and the genesis effect cgi also.

Rumor has it they're planning on releasing another boxed set, so maybe we will get to see it in HD whenever we want!
