Generations - "Call me Jim"

Captain59

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
When Kirk tells Picard to, "call me Jim," Picard hestitates and gives a little smile at the idea. I always wondered why he did this, since it didn't mean anything except to Kirk and Spock. I thought it was a little blunder in the writing. Then just recently I remembered that Picard and Spock mind melded. So now I'm wondering...could that little grin be because Picard does indeed understand from his mind meld with Spock? If so, then that was actually very good writing.

Do mind melds leave after effects?

Do mind melds leave after effects?

Just the knowledge of what had been shared in the meld. For Picard to have understood the special meaning of 'Jim' to Spock, their meld would have had to have been pretty deep for Spock to have shared that much. Unlike his meld with Sarek where they literally shared each others minds, Picard offered Spock the oppertunity to 'touch' what he had shared with Sarek.

So I'll stick with the idea that Picard was just jazzed about being on a first name basis with Kirk.

^ Thats how i always took it. I also think that even in such a difficult situation as the two were in at the moment, Kirk so ..... arg! i cannot think of the word.... full of life, approachable, had a sense of humor....

..... good lord, a mind is a terrible thing to lose.

Don't feel bad. By Friday, my mental abilities are usually running on 'E'. ;)

If you think about it, Picard would have had to have been pretty much in awe. Here he is trying to persuade a thought to be long dead legend to help him. Not only is this legend not dead, but Picard finds him so full of life. Most likely not what Picard would have expected from just reading history books.

Either that or Picard was geeking out at being on first name terms with Kirk

That's what I thought. Kirk was a legend in Star Fleet and Picard had a fanboy moment of being on a first name basis with him.

I'd have to go along with that. Up until that point, Picard just kept on calling him by his rank - most likely as a sign of respect, even if they were still both Captains. Kirk was a legend, and Picard treated him as such. To go on first name terms with the man, to him, was an honour.

I suppose the best current analogy would be that you are a captain in the contemporary Royal Navy. You're pulled into a present day version of the Nexus and you meet Admiral Horatio Nelson who asks you to call him Horatio. That would make you smile like Picard did...

This is how I view it as well...

Effervescent?

You can't be sure about that - it's reading too much into it.

MAYBE Picard smiles because his pee pee accidently brushes up against something, possibly a branch and it gives him "nice tickle".

I agree with the others about the first name terms thing, but that's actually an exceptionally good connection to have made! Good thinking, and who knows - we can't prove that's not the reason!

(Maybe Picard went poking around in Spock's mind tapping into his Professor X powers... the cheeky monkey)

Yeah, I remmber Kirk telling Picard to call him Jim. I seen that movie many times and wonder why Kirk would be telling Picard to call him Jim. I wonder that because there were only certain people that Kirk would allow them to call him by his real first name. Like for instance only Spock and McCoy, called him Jim, about all the time, and that was because they were his best friends and were like brothers to him. Not many others called Kirk, Jim, like Spock and McCoy did.But you are right about Spock mind melding with Picard, so I guess somehow Kirk knew about it, and thats why he told Picard to call him Jim. So that would make a lot of sinse. I guess I never realized that before, or I just wasn't paying any attietion. I pay a little more attetion to the movie and that episode of TNG next time.
