http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090711/ap_on_re_us/us_mormon_church_trespassing_1 I would normaly think this is wrong (arresting the couple) BUT this is what made me wonder if the couple planed this knowing the reaction of the cops in the area? (quote) Matt Aune said he and his partner, Derek Jones, were walking home from a concert nearby on Thursday night, cutting through the plaza near the Salt Lake City Mormon temple (end quote) Now did they think that cutting thru the plaza and ''kissing'' near the MORMAN plaza wasn't going to cause trouble? I mean the MORMANS helped put the kabash on the gay-marrige vote in california to begin with.

true im sure they knew they would put some noses out of joint, but really should they let others decide how they live their lives?

Though I cannot understand how a kiss on the cheek by anyone could be classified as inappropiate behaviour by any sane person the guys should have left when they were asked to seeing it was private property.

If I lived there I would be tempted to see if security guards would tell me off and ask me to leave if I kissed 1) my mother on the cheek 2) my son on the cheek 3) a small child on the cheek etc.

Of course they wouldn't. Yeah, these guys had to know what they were doing, but they were indeed singled out because they were gay.

In that case - if I wasn't told off for kissing my mother on the check I would complain to the local newspaper etc after all the guys were told that that no public displays of affection aren't allowed on the property.

Mormon. If you are going to bash someone's faith spell it right otherwise you look like an uninformed idiot with a hate-axe to grind. ;)

That said, they knew this would cause trouble because most mainstream Mormons are Anti Homosexuality. If they didn't they've been living under a rock. Just a ploy on their part to get attention.

In a sane society two men kissing on the cheek wouldn't raise on eyebrow let alone get this sort of attention. In many societies on Earth heterosexual men kiss each other on the cheek.

When I read the OP before I looked at the article I thought it was going to be a tongue caressing tongue full-on kiss but it wasn't - it was a simple kiss on the cheek like many people give.

What right does a church security guard have to put anyone in handcuffs? Resisting a rent-a-cop is not a crime.

That actually is a good question. I don't see where the church had the right to restrain anyone in such a case.

It was private property.

Whicj is why they should hav eleft when they were asked to - but that said it was still a very silly over reaction by the security guards to have commented on the kiss in the first place.

I was thinking that to. It certainly wouldn't be allowed in my country. Here the seciurity guards would have to call the police. But I thought the laws might be a bit different in Utah.

A simple kiss on the property of one of the most anti-homo churches out there. The single biggest source of revenue for the Salt Lake Region and the Faith of many of it's lawmakers.

We have this in micro down in Palmyra NY, town is also run by the Mormons they get whatever they want just for asking.

What I see happening here is two gay-rights activists trying to make a name for themselves by snogging on church property and resisting arrest. All we have is their word vs the guard's words.

Frankly, the issue simply boils down to this: They are looking for attention they got attention and this thread will be nine pages by this time tomorrow. :)

Next time the Mormons come a-knocking on my door or ask if they can talk to me at the bus-stop I am going to bring this case up. I wonder how quickly that will get rid of them?

I will mention the case to my friends as well and they will also want to bring it up if the Mormons knock on their door.

Well, kudos to them as they handled it better than I would have. If a church security guard tried to handcuff me, I'd have punched him out and would probably be facing an assault charge, which I'd fight to the bitter end. Since when can anyone but a cop handcuff you? Is there some sort of strange law in Utah that I don't know about?

That said, the couple should have left the grounds when they were asked as it is private property.

I wish that some of the Mormons who have approached me on my property left the moment they were told to. They don't always do so especially when I was sitting in the front garden and had no door to slam in their face.

When you are out on a Mission you are cut off from news (TV news, newspapers, radio news.) So any you might encounter out there will not have heard of this... yet.

More than likely the local government is also composed mostly of Mormons, which means they'll look past it.
