Most fuel efficient vehicles of 2010.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bestworst.shtml

Toyota Prius Hybrid
4 cyl, 1.8 L, Automatic(CVT), HEV, Regular. 51 mpg city & 48 mpg hwy is the most efficient.

worst is the Lamborghini Murcielago 8 city & 13 hwy... among cars.

Audi A3
4 cyl, 2 L, Automatic(S6), Diesel 30 city & 42 hwy would be my choice off that list of most efficient...if I had $30-$40k. :sigh:

VW-maybe...Honda-NO, Toyota-NO, Hyundai-Maybe.

None of this info is really surprising.

Not exactly on topic, but to do with car fuel economy generally.

I normally drive an Audi S4, which being a 4.2L V8, naturally has pretty poor fuel economy (about 24 highway, urban dropping to around 18-20 or less in stop-start). No surprises there. But this week I'm driving a Volvo XC70 as a courtesy car since mine's in the garage. This is a 2.x (can't remember) turbodiesel, so I expected it to be more fuel efficient, and the quoted figures are in the high 30s for highway.

Nothing doing! It's only marginally more efficient than my Audi. I haven't bothered to work it out exactly (and can't figure out how to get the onboard computer to do it for me), but I reckon I'm getting an average of about 25-26 out of the Volvo, compared to an average of around 19-20 from the Audi.

Surprised the heck out of me.

Nissan Titan made it on for worse among standard trucks.

Nissan Titan 4WD, 8 cyl, 5.6 L, Automatic 5-spd 12 city & 17 hwy.

Well, if you can afford the car, you sure as hell don't need to worry about the cost of gas.

At least that's better than an Abrams M1 tank, which uses about 3 gallons per mile -- not miles per gallon. Its turbine engine runs on JP-8 jet fuel, which costs about the same as unleaded premium gasoline.

(Just thought I'd throw out that info for anyone who's considering purchasing a tank.)

The sad thing is that no one makes a regular engined car now that gets as good as the Geo metro or the Ford festiva from the 90s does on mileage. My wife has a festiva and it gets average 40mpg with her running her and there using A/C or whatever (she has written down the miles and gallons since we got the car). My nephew has a 2000 Chevy(geo)metro and does even better. Are they intentionally getting crappy mileage with traditional setup to sell more hybrids?

No, they're just not selling 1800 pound, piece of shit death traps that make 80 horsepower anymore. Those old cars probably put out more emissions than a modern semi-truck too.

I think you mean "worst" rather than "worse," but whatever. If you're driving one of those and you're thinking--even for a moment--about what kind of gas mileage you're getting... well, you're doing it wrong.

My Toyota Yaris makes almost 45 miles/gallon (i.e. 19 km/litre) in best road conditions and with a relaxed drive. Average city is 35 miles/gallon (15 km/litre). Quite happy with it.

I guess it's a matter of different needs. I mostly drive around town and for short distance trips. My car can pack up to five people (nights out), or two people and a fairly large load of baggages (holidays). I don't need anything more than that.

See my car can also pack up to 5 people but it doesn't include 5 people so it is the perfect car to go on road trips with.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Since it's undoubtedly larger, I'm sure your car can pack five people, too. I was pointing out that a Yaris, even if smaller, has the same number of seats.

I wasn't. Right up until I read this post. Now I really want one. How awesome would that be?!
