Gary Mitchell

The little blonde lab technician would probably be more likely the chick from the deadly years. She was a scientist and doctor and had a failed romance with Kirk.

Janet Wallace was Harve Bennet's original idea for Kirk's encounter in TWOK. It was never mentioned that she was the "little blonde lab tech" from WNMHGB. It's just us Trekkies who make those links.

That being said, it is generally accpeted in Trekdom that the girl WAS Carol. She's the only one who Kirk "almost married" - he would have but Carol was the one who pushed him away.

I really liked both WNMHGB and TWOK - Fontana's pocket books with Gary Mitchell in them are fun too - Gary Lockwood is still a kewl guy to hang out with and have a beer. He was a star in his day and quite a hot property and then 2001 came along and sort of killed his career when he became so well known.

I almost won his contact lenses TWICE on eBay-the guy who won them the first time paid over a grand for them and then also had Sally Kellerman's too.

It's pretty clear: he advised her on how best to win young Jim over.

Well, I was thinking more in terms of specifics. Was he playing puppet master and manipulating Kirk and the lab tech, or did it start off as a joke of some sort and get out of hand, possibly with or without the girls knowledge? "Toying with it" is the key phrase. I don't lose sleep over it or anything.

GOD this aggravates me. Why do Trekies (and fan-boys of every stripe) feel the need to tie everything together like that? There are billions of women on earth. Terra-quadrillions in the known universe. That's the beauty of the universe. Why would it be the same girl?

And why wouldn't it be the same girl? And while I wouldn't want a wormhole to tie every Star Trek character and plot device to within 6 degrees of separation, the nearly-married, blonde, lab tech/Carol:blonde scientist, mother-of-Kirk's-illegitimate-son coincidence is just too ripe of a fruit to ignore.

Quadrillions of females notwithstanding, Kirk was one man with one penis. He was also a busy man in those days sacrificing much to get a command as early in life as he did. No doubt he spread himself a little thin in the romance department, but when it comes to serious relationships that have serious consequences (questions of marriage/babies) beyond a little casual dating, the Jim/Carol dynamic is prime fodder and time is precious. I am not saying it must be Carol, in fact, as xortex suggested and I had blatantly forgotten, Janet Wallace could very well be another (of billions) contender; Kirk clearly liked blondes. I am just saying I like the idea that it could have been Carol, and will just assume in my happy little perception of the fictional realm that it was. That is until something on screen comes to the forefront and challenges it.

(And that's aside from the fact that neither the writers of WNMHGB or TWOK intended for Carol to be that lab technician).

Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Intentions don't fill balloons much less make movies. I could care less about the intentions of WNMHGB's writers since it was just a throwaway line in the 2nd pilot episode. TWOK wouldn't even be fully realized for another 16 years. It's we who make the connections with what we are given, as Stompy suggests. He also mentioned Harve Bennett's original TWOK idea was for Janet Wallace to be project leader. Researching it now, but I'd never heard that until today. Its good that his intentions were never realized, since there was no mention of David in the TOS episode, and he most certainly would have been born by that time. Appears David wasn't even a factor when Janet was prime candidate anyhow. Of course it's all fiction, and you can explain anything away; "Janet didn't reveal David until after the events of The Deadly Years, and her dead husband had raised David during his first years yada yada..." But I digress. That isn't how it played out.

I'm sorry if it aggrevates you, but I do enjoy such discussions and postulations.

I see Gary Lockwood's have "GL" on the case, written by a monkey with lipstick; but why do Sally Kellerman's have little slices of apple pie on them?

Mmmm...pie...

Well, given such a humorous and well-argued response, who am I to deny you the fun? Especially since you "wouldn't want a wormhole to tie every Star Trek character and plot device to within 6 degrees of separation," unlike way too many of us.

You, umm, are sure Kirk has only one penis, yes? A lot can happen between now and the unspecified future of TOS.

Not to harp on the Carol Marcus/Blonde Lab Girl theme but,

In a world as complex as Star Trek has gotten, it is inevitable that threads become intertwined. Also there is a considerable amount of loose threads left hanging. Some of these become interesting enough that they can be used to create whole stories around.

We just like to be able to see the beginning and end of each thread in the pattern.

I'd absolutely have believed it if Carole's son had been named Gary Marcus. (Not Junior but in tribute to an old friend.) ;)

I thank you. Star Trek is fun. :D

Well, you caught me there... I will have to defer to Occum's Razor on that one (though that can be dangerous mixing penises and razors.)

But no, can't be too certain about my facts. If I'm wrong though, it would explain a great many things. I'll have to watch Wink Of An Eye again and check Deela's face again after the uhm hmm <clears throat>

(Damn. Now I won't ever be able to watch that closing scene with her staring into the viewscreen, without hearing her in my mind saying longingly... "but he had TWO penises Rael.")
