Garak / Andrew Robinson

Expendable

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I am currently watching Dirty Harry and for the first time I realized that the Scorpio killer in Dirty Harry is none other than our favorite Cardie...

His portrayal of psychotic characters is really quite entertaining.

Have you read the DS9 novel he wrote? A Stitch In Time. One of Trek's best. And he didn't use a ghostwriter - he wrote it all himself. :techman:

He was also the father of a rapist in one of the final episodes of The Practice. Had a couple of scenes with William Shatner, too.

Shame he didn't return for Boston Legal to share scenes with Rene Auberjonois...

I have! What a wonderful book, really I think the best Trek lit I've ever read. Very talented guy. I love that he was invested enough in his character to do that for us fans.

Unfortunately I don't think AJF has written any other full length Trek novels although he did write a "Stitch" sequel as a short story (though I haven't read it).

I've read A Stitch in Time too, and while I enjoyed it, I don't share the opinion that it's the best Treklit book. It was fine, interesting and a good read but I don't find as brilliant as others seem too.

I have also read the short story The Calling (it's in Prophecy and Change anthology); I found it really strange and didn't like it at all.

Oh, he wrote a short-story follow-up to A Stitch in Time? Hmm, it wasn't good, that's too bad. Could you be so kind as to tell me what it was about? You can even spoiler it if you want, I don't care.

I don't read a lot of Trek lit nowadays, but I did read The Never-Ending Sacrifice by Una McCormack and found it very good as well. Trek lit is very hit or miss, it depends on the author.

It could be just me, so don't let me discourage your from reading, if you'd want to :)

It's about Garak going to a place called Vinculum, where he meets Bashir. That Vinculum is some kind of a place that spiritual Hebitian went to--it's not a real place, but some kind of spiritual journey :wtf: My impression was that Garak had gone mad. Really. That journey was suppose to show him his way and answer his call. In the end he ends up surgically altered on Earth

There's a story by Una McCormick in Prophecy and Change too. It's set on Cardassia with Kira, Garak and Damar (at the time of the last eps of DS9) and it's totally awesome :D

Thanks Gul Re'jal. Based on your description, it sounds like Garak
took an acid trip or something, heh. But I kind of like those freaky, mind-bendy types of stories, so maybe it will be more my cup of kanar than it was yours.
I may just have to buy Prophecy and Change now. Thanks! :D

About the spoiler:

I heard that the Vinculum is actually another name for the Bajoran Temple - i.e. it's the same "place" that Bajorans go to when they have an Orb vision. Is that not true?

I thought you fellow fans of the character and actor might find this tidbit from Memory Alpha interesting:

"Rachel Robinson played "Melanie" in "The Visitor." She is also the daughter of Andrew Robinson (Garak) and was a leading candidate for the role of Ezri Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon and works primarily as a singer."

Cool, huh? Can you imagine if she'd actually played Ezri and got to act alongside her dad?

"The Calling" is very confusing because it's a sequel to a play that Robinson wrote and played with Alexander Siddig on Trek conventions. The editors of "Prophecy and Change" asked him to re-write it into a short story for the book, but he wanted to write something new for the anthology, so he wrote "The Calling". From what I've heard, the play dealt with the Vinculum.

Wow! I had no idea.

I had the opportunity to sit down with him for a few minutes at the DS9 breakfast at the most recent Vegas convention. He is a really cool guy.

p.s. - best $90 I ever spent. Got to personally meet Nana Visitor, Jeffrey Combs, Andrew Robinson, Salome Jens, Aron Eisenberg, and James Darren. It was heaven!
