Garak and Section 31

Photon

I would have loved to see Garak somehow involved in clandestine operations w/S31.

The old spy working for a different espionage group and doing it under The Sisko's nose perhaps pitting him against the ever-do-gooder, Bashir.

Don't think S31 would hire anyone other than an Earthling to do their dirty work, but intriguing none the less

Garak, I think, viewed himself as a Cardassian patriot, which, toi him, meant doing what he himself viewed as in the best interest of Cardassia. The people, not whatever Guls and Legates were running things at the moment.

He might have worked with S31 on any matters of mutual interest, as S31 worked with that Romulan. (Koval?)

Garak may have been working with S31 when he blew up the Romulan Senator's ship. How else could he have snuck on board, bypassed the video surveillance in the shuttlebay and the Romulan ship's security and then get out again?

I'm sure Garak remembered a few tricks and held on to some devices from when he was working for the Obsidian Order.

Not to mention knowledge of DS9's security systems.

Yes, Garak. Sloan allowed himself to be overpowered, spilled important secrets, and get killed by two complete amateurs.

Then again, isn't it the quiet ones that you gotta watch? Sloan could have tricks up his sleeve that no one knows about. Who knows, he might not even be dead. ;)

Bashir isn't an expert spy, but he is an expert doctor. He knows dead when he sees it. And the cure he got from Sloan did cure Odo and the founders. Section 31 didn't want them to have it, or they would have given them the cure in some more dependable way than via Bashir and O'Brien.

Sloan was captured by Bashir because of hubris. He thought he could control Bashir.

I think Garak and S31 are both too smart to work with the other. Garak worked with Sisko because he knew Sisko had no intention to make Cardassia a puppet state. Sisko's plans to fight the Dominion were compatible with Garak's plans to make Cardassia independent and less warlike. And S31 has profiled Garak as somebody who will never do as he's told unless it's exactly what he planned on doing anyway.

At most they might drop Garak information when they think their interests are in common.

S31 would never trust Garak.

I like Photon's idea in the OP. That would have made for some great episodes.

I agree that S31 would never trust Garak. That's why S31 should have gotten some leverage over Garak, and then forced him to cooperate based on the potential to wield that leverage. That way S31 wouldn't have to trust Garak and Garak wouldn't have to like the job, but he would have to do it anyway.

They'd never take him, they'd much prefer a patriot for the other side, that someone like garak who is far too opportunistic.

Bashir isn't an expert spy, but he is an expert doctor. He knows dead when he sees it.

Actually, that's the one thing where he explicitly admits to having problems! See "The Passenger".

And the cure he got from Sloan did cure Odo and the founders. Section 31 didn't want them to have it, or they would have given them the cure in some more dependable way than via Bashir and O'Brien.

There would of course have been multiple channels arranged for; since this one worked, there was no need to use the others...
