Gamma Ray Burst

Could a GRB from T Pryxidis or another star a similar distance away (1 kiloparsec give or take) cause significant environmental damage to the Earth and cause a near-extinction-level event?

I'm working on a science fiction story idea and I need real science for this that will stand up to scrutiny.

If this is not scientifically plausible, then I need something that will devastate Earth's environment and kill the majority (60-80%) of the population (not instantly, but over several years).

I DO NOT want nuclear annihilation or meteor impact, those have been done far too often.

There is actually a thread about a star going supernova. If its close enough it could cause a lot of damage. Just an idea, becuase the gamma ray burst needs to come from a different place.
