Game of Thrones RPG Released Yesterday

GoT RPG arrived yesterday from Amazon and I gave it a go on my XBox. I didn't get too into it, as I'm still trying to finish up a couple things in Skyrim, maybe a couple of hours. My thoughts on it so far:

The Good:
  • Character generation is quite good - more stats based than customize your own avatar, though.
  • I've played quite a few RPG's and this is the first time I've played one that reminds me of the old pencil-and-paper RPG's. They even have a White Wolf-like "Strengths & Weaknesses" upgrade chart - picking attributes which could be hindrances to your abilities and using points to boost special abilities elsewhere. There may be other RPG's out there that do that, but this is the first time I've experienced it.
  • They have three of original characters I've recognized so far - Lord Commander Mormont, Lord Varys and Queen Cersei that I'm aware of now. I've encountered Mormont and Varys is the narrator and they are both the original actors from the show. Not sure about Cersei yet, but I'm assuming it will be the same actress.
  • I've only been at Castle Black (you start off as a Crow of the Night's Watch - a hunter of deserters) but it seems to be quite faithfully rendered to the scenes in the show. I instantly recognized the courtyard and fighting/training area.
  • Mapping system is WAY better than Skyrim. It's a precise map of your surroundings with accurate locations of items & people - not some amorphous unrecognizable blobs. And, it's got a HUD! I miss that...
  • You get to pick your responses in conversations - pretty standard with RPG's now-adays.
The Not-As-Good:
  • Graphical quality isn't the greatest. On par with games that have been around for a couple years. If you're looking for Skyrim-level environments, you will be disappointed.
  • The opening is somewhat long exposition - mostly for people who aren't familiar with the GoT universe. For those who follow the show religiously (like myself), it could get a tad boring. I kind-of liked it, though.
  • The voice acting of the non-original cast is somewhat over-dramatized. They probably blew most of their budget on official licensing through HBO.
I don't know if I like or dislike the combat system yet. It can be real-time, but it also gives you the ability to queue up attack commands to make combinations. I'll have to keep working it to see how usable it really is. Unlike other RPG's like Dragon Age, Fable & Saint's Row, this one does not seem to be as much as a button-masher as the others.

Overall, I like it so far - as much as it can be liked with only a couple of hours of play. Like I said, it doesn't seem "next generation" in any sense, but people who enjoy the show will likely enjoy this. More later as I get deeper into the world. Quite a few places in Westeros are supposed to be mapped in this game. I'll try to pick this up again later on.
