Fringe Renewed for Third Season

Fringe has been renewed for a third season, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

The sci-fi series, executive produced by J.J. Abrams, has struggled ratings-wise in its second season after moving from Tuesdays at 9/8c to the competitive Thursday at 9/8c timeslot.

Fringe has averaged 7.6 million viewers this season, compared to an average of 9.96 million viewers in its first year. The most recent episode on Feb. 4 attracted 7.76 million viewers and a 2.8 rating in the adults age 18-49 demo. However, the series has played well on DVR. The Feb. 4 episode surged 36 percent in the demo from DVR viewings.

The series' renewal was first reported by EW.
Fringe will return with new episodes on April 1.
Are you excited the show is coming back?

Not suprising, even when some whacko "experts" had discussed a possible cancellation before.

Now it's time to get rid of Heroes. :p

I honestly didn't care one way or the other if it was renewed or cancelled. If it was brought back I'd probably watch it but if not I woud have been fine with that.

I just hope that the writers will move away from monsters of the week stories and shift to a more heavily serialized show because the most talked about and biggest highlights of each season are always the mythology episodes. Until this happens the show will for me continue to be hit-or-miss. LOST demonstrated a show could go on for many years and still be all mythology all the time so unless FOX just doesn't want it I don't see why they shouldn't just embrace that style.

I will say though the series has done a good job in the last few episodes of making me more invested in the cast of characters before then I was rather apathetic.

I'm glad FOX realized it was up against three of the most popular shows on television and renewed it.

I'm the opposite.

I like how it's not full 100% serialized mythology. Why complain about the best of all worlds? Remember, everyone is different, and for those that like to just kick back, relax and not have to worry about missing an episode here or there, it's perfect. And for others that like the mythology, that's there too.

No matter which way they take, people will complain (Lost isn't at a 100% approval rating, for example).

Don't break the formula if it's working I say.

I don't watch Fringe but I'm glad when any sf/f show survives - better than the cop show or reality junk that would replace it.

Ahhh, give Heroes another 12 or 13 eps to wrap up the story. NBC's lineup, tho ironically better than most, is still full of cop shows and other disposable junk. Even Heroes is more worthy of a timeslot than all that crap.

Fringe sneakily became my favourite show this year, so I'm happy to hear about the renewal. While some of the "monster-of-the-week" episodes haven't been all that good, others have been some of the series' best.

Because it isn't the best of all worlds. It would be one thing if the standalones seemed fresh and were interesting enough on their own but they aren't. They are predictable, stale, formulaic rehashes of stories we've seen before and better. No effort is made to put a new spin on them. Other times they don't mine the idea for all its worth.

The only episodes that actually grab my attention and involve me are the mythology episodes. Those episodes seem fresh and give Fringe the feel it is a unique series with its own unique identity and not some X-Files wannabe.

But I don't think it is working. Ratings aren't that great the only reason FOX renewed it is they don't have much else as evidenced by how quickly Past Life lasted.

I simply don't see a groundswell of interest or praise in the monster standalones. If they did them as well as TXF or TNG which showed how to do episodic tv by throwing in a nice mix of all type of stories then I'd be all for it even though arcs have spoiled me. But they aren't for the most part Fringe's one-offs are not much beyond pedestrian.

Is there really a demand for Heroes to wrap up with a proper finale. Do people care about these characters anymore to see them get closure. Do you care what happens to annoying childish Hiro, interchangeable Tracy, Claire, Sylar, Noah, Matt etc?

I always read the comments you two make, too.

I think I have more fun on the Live Commentaries I attend than the actual show I'm commenting on at times.

;)

Seriously though, I am glad that the Fringe story won't end with the season finale, especially now that it's REALLY getting interesting with Liv know Peter's true nature. April 1 can't get here soon enough.

Ratings aren't that great because they moved to the over-crowded Thursday evening schedule. The proof of this is how much better the standalone episode did when it aired on the Monday at the beginning of the year compared to the Thursday viewings.

I see the real issue you seem to have here. You forget TV is written for the aggregate with differing tastes and not the individual. :p

For example, I also still enjoy Heroes. Are others like me not allowed a proper send-off? Bitter, bitter, bitter.
