Friends who aren't members of TrekBBS but should be.

I have two friends in particular who I am surprised are not members here. They're both big enough fans to have made the trek out to Vegas to go to the Star Trek Experience and they usually have the most up to date info on Trek yet they have never signed up here. They are both well aware that I have been posting here for over 7 years too.

Do you have any friends who are big Trek fans and Sci-Fi fans in general who you are surprised are not members of this BBS?

I know a few casual fans, but not anybody who's interested enough to want to post on a forum, let alone visit the Vegas experience. Good for me anyway. Then I can freely bitch about my life on occasion, without having to worry who's feelings might be hurt. :p

Most of my real life friends are in the medical profession and most of their hobbies revolve around that. I know a couple of casual genre fans, but I've found more kindred spirits online than in real life.

This thread should be closed immediately for the safety of all. I once had this thought in regard to Kommander, and look what happened!

^It was actually seeing that picture of you about stab Kommander that made me think of starting this thread!

^We'd probably need to see your medical file, and that's something I'd prefer you keep to yourself thanks. :)

I am the only Star Trek fan I know.

I have forced some of my friends to watch Firefly, Farscape, and nuBSG, and they've all loved them, but they're not really "scifi" fans. They're just fans of good TV. None of them are dorky enough to post on a scifi message board.

My best pal (who now lives on the other side of the country) is a huge Trek/Sci Fi/Time Travel/TV & Movie fanatic. We can talk about Dexter, Lost, Enterprise, SG1 for hours. But she's considerably older than I am---about 20 years older---and none of the friends she has are closet geeks or have any interest in sci fi. Hubby and I keep her updated on all the sci fi news via email, and I've tried to get her to join the BBS, but it hasn't happened.

What sucks is that she has some nerve deafness, so talking on the phone is extremely difficult for her, so all our communication is done by email.

She also had a TON of health problems lately that made typing difficult and/or painful. I'm hoping that someday, she will join the BBS, so I can spend even more time with her.

About 5 years ago a friend at work (big TNG fan) registered after I showed him the site. The obnoxious bastard got banned on his first day :guffaw:Sorry, mods, that was my bad call

If ANY of my friends ever found out I posted on here i'd be a laughing stock. I'd never live it down.
I do have one particular friend who likes Star Trek but he would NEVER go as far as posting on a Trek board.

Sounds like you have really judgmental friends.

Considering the massive Trek fan club in Denmark I am surprised to not having met any of the people I know from there on this board -especially considering the quality of the fan-club web-site…

I had a friend I introduced (and turned) to Trek yet wasn't able to teach the wonders of the internet (this place).
It used to irritate me that he wouldn't sign up but today I'm pretty happy he didn't; as it turned out he wasn't anybody's friend but his own :(

^^Man, that sucks. :( I hate it when you find that out about a friend.

The only one of my friends who's into Trek enough to post here is my roommate (well, and her boyfriend), but she doesn't really do the message board thing anymore, and he doesn't have internet. Or a computer. And I actually wasn't online much at all for like a year, but then I was unemployed for a little over a month and remembered I'd signed up here. I'm all right with my friends not being on here though, like An Officer said, it gives you more room to bitch without offending anyone you know. I've shown my roommate some of the threads on here though that I know she'd find funny.

I actually knew from very early on that he had psychopatic personality traits. Just not how severe they were -I found that out the hard way.

I have another friend (a real one!) who believes SciFi is all about space travel and BEM's - I've been telling her for years that although it might appear so to the casual observer, most really good SciFi is about the human condition. -she won't buy that -what can I do? -turn her son over to the SciFi-side

That's mostly true for me as well. Actually I only have one friend who watches any scifi at all, though my siblings are both fans of Star Trek. I cannot picture my sister ever posting on a scifi board though.

Usually when people find out in RL that I like Trek, they're surprised and think I'm kidding. I get sick of people making jokes about a show they've never even watched, too. So I mostly don't talk about it.

One of my closest friends probably would've been loved this board and I kept meaning to mention it to him. He was the only person I knew that I could have an enthusiastic conversation about Trek and other sci fi shows, and really, he actually out-geeked me by quite a bit. Unfortunately, he died in a car wreck about a year ago.

I can't think of anyone else I know in RL that would be interested enough, although I did tell my mother to take a look at the Sombreroprise thread, which she got a big kick out of. I seriously doubt she'll be joining the board, though, and I'm totally okay with that, lol.

I have a life long Trek fan friend of mine and suggested he check this place out. He did and said he didn't like it. Mostly the way people here treat each other and the limited narrow viewpoints. He's never been back.

That is classic! What did he get banned for?
