Re: Friday Night Lights: "Keeping Up Appearances" 2/27, Grading/Discus
This was another great episode for the show's 3rd season. I gave it an above average, since it was almost excellent, but not quite as amazing as this show can be and has been before.
Landry's story was great, and I like that he talked to Principal Taylor about the whole thing. It also makes sense that he'd be completely ok with someone being a lesbian, since he's been one of the smartest and most open-minded characters since day 1. The Flaming Lips song was a great bit, too.
I liked the Jamarcus story, especially Tami taking over the conversation with the parents and as usual getting right to the heart of the issue by explaining what a good coach and person Eric is. Of course, we've never heard of Jamarcus and probably will never see him again (like the star defense player who beat up Castor in season 1,) but it's always nice to see a Panther who isn't in the opening credits.
J.D.'s father is getting worse as the weeks go by; I'm VERY interested to see where they're taking this story. Nice how his mom took him out for forbidden junk food at the end. Coach Taylor was, as always, completely professional about the whole issue, and even though I still think Saracen got the really short straw, the coach is giving everything he's got to coaching J.D. here. And I have to agree with you guys that Saracen and Julie were sorely missed this week.
And last but not least, Street seems to have finally found something that will make him happy. I'm still bummed that he didn't stay on as a coach after early season 2 when he left because of that asshole Tennesee guy, but Street as an agent I can definitely buy. His almost-fight with Herc was great, and his scene with Lyla reminded me how great those two were/are together. It's too bad we never saw his reaction to her seriously dating Riggins, although I suppose some of that is mitigated by him having a kid, and the strike cutting wherever the rest of season 2 was going.
This season has been great so far, and I'm certain they'll keep it up a la season 1. No major missteps thus far, and the Panthers are on the way to the playoffs! Whooooooooo!
