For everyone who doesn't have DirecTV, here comes the third season of Friday Night Lights, edited for commercial TV since they've got to get their 17 minutes of commercials in each hour.

Coach Taylor is unsure how strong his team will be without Smash; a new star player (Jeremy Sumpter) arrives on the scene; a season-ending injury results in Smash losing his college scholarship.

Excellent.

Friday Night Lights is back! Season 2 was a little inconsitent in the beginning but the show felt like Season 1 again. All the actors were on and the storylines are compelling.

A few notes...

-Good humor tonight, with the Drunk Tim montage in the beginning and the antics of Billy. Not to mention the Smoothie scene.

-Geez Eric...way to let Pyscho Tami rip off your balls during that family squabble over Julie's schedule.

-One thing that wasn't very FNL...the Panthers won in a blowout! I don't know why Matt is worried about JP. Under Matt, the team racked up 38 points and all JP did was score a meaningless garbage time TD.

-Interesting note...I've read that the Direct TV original airings of these episodes were over 50 minutes long. Which means they had to edit about 20% of the show. It sure didn't hurt it.

I recorded them, they were closer to 40 minutes.

as for the rest of your observations, I ain't saying a word but you'll love this season.

Tim, Lyla and Tyra being seniors for this year is really stretching it. It means they were sophomores for season one -- just like Matt and Landry -- when Street was a senior.

Also, regarding Tyra getting into college, what happened to her volleyball domination?

I think the silliest thing with Tim being in college is that you're supposed to believe he was the same age and grade as Matt and that's clearly not the case. I also don't buy him and Lyla being two years younger than Jason. Show-wise that is.

Yeah, that bugs me, too, but at the same time, I don't mind so much, 'cause it means that next season, it'll be an all new team!

When was the last time ya heard of a girl gettin' a full ride for higher education because she could spike a ball?

I really enjoyed the season premiere...wasn't sure I was goin' to watch on NBC, since DirectTV episodes were supposed to be longer. Just hope to get the uncut versions on DVD.

I hear Matt is the only senior now and they've retconned Julie and Landry to juniors, which makes no sense whatsoever.

It's hard as hell to replace a cast this good but it anyone is capable of doing it, it's FNL.

It's called Title 9. Volleyball scholarships are the norm.

Sorry, that got me to thinkin' of the soundbite from The American President, when some guy is talkin' to him about how folks want equality in sports. Michael Douglas's President says, "Didn't Title 9 take care of this?"

The guy says, "Yeah, but now they want it enforced!"

Jason Street is still going to be on the show but he's no longer a regular (same with Smash) and will have a small story arc.

average. it didnt blow me away, but it wasnt bad. it did a nice job of jumping the storyline ahead. but i do wonder what happened to santiago. also, didnt tami taylor tell tyra that she could get into a 4 year, but had to go through a junior college first? and julie is starting to look older now, her face isnt as round.

still, i am just happy to see the taylor family again. eric and tami really have the best relationship i've seen on tv.

It was a good episode, despite the fact that they're really confusing what grade the kids are supposed to be in.
