Freeware game thread...

BSG Beyond the Red Line :
http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/

The quality of this game is amazing for something which is being produced 100% by fans in their free time. It looks unbelievable even when compared to some of the latest commercial games. It is still a work in progress but they have released a playable demo which i highly recommend playing.

Yeah, I once took a quick look at the demo and it felt quite professional. I didn't play all the way through it, though. I'm gonna wait for the full game.

You know, how come BSG fans can make something so awesome in their spare time, yet the "professional" game makers haven't been able to make anything more than a mediocre-at-best game? (I speak of the game available on XBOX Live)

If you own a Nvidia video card you can download the first few levels of Portal and some of Half Life 2 for free after installing steam.

Here is a list of freeware games which i found on the net. Most are older commercial games which the developers have decided to allow people to download for free. I haven’t checked all of the links but the majority appear to work.

Adventure Games:Arcade/Car Racing/Action Games:First Person Shooters:Flight Simulator:
  • Air Attack - Air combat game which was previously called Fighter Ace
  • Freespace 2 SCP (Source Code Project) - Classic space flight simulator - NOTE: The link gets you ONLY the installer file which is about 21 MB in size. The actual download for the game from this file can exceed 3 GB, I believe. It's best to let it run overnight, and then you'll have to re-run a few files to update them.
Platform games:Puzzle:Role Playing Games and Massive Online Multi Player Games (MMORPG):RTS or Turned based Strategy Games:
  • Triple A - "Triple A, a free strategy game engine, comes with many ver. of Axis and Allies, strong community with lots of people making mods for it to be risk, LOTR,SW ect. Supports play by email or realtime play with chat."
  • Pawn2 - "If you like to play chess then this is for you. Perfect training tool to pick up understanding for the moves you make. Lots of adjustment for 'level of play.' This is the chess game I enjoy and find it to work well. If you want to learn to play chess without someone, this game will make you a pro. Two player action is offered as well."
  • Colossus - Clone of an old Avalon Hill game called Titan
  • FreeCiv - Civilization Clone
  • Ground Control - Real Time Strategy Game
  • Gunbound Revolution -
  • Lord Monarch
  • Netstorm -
  • Scorched 3D -
  • Simcity Classic - The game that got many non-games addicted to computer games is playable online.
  • UFO: Alien Invasion - "UFO: ALIEN INVASION is a strategy game featuring tactical combat against hostile alien forces which are about to infiltrate earth at this very moment" Based after the X-COM games
Sports:Platform games:Various and Flash or Shockwave:
I also created a freeware windows applications/utilities thread in the Science and Technology forums which some people mind find useful.

I don't know if this is what the OP had in mind, but Kingdom of Loathing is crazy addictive and hilarious! A winning combination! :)

Yeah, except you can only "move" a certain number of times per day.

Limitation on gameplay = FAIL

Limitation on gameplay actually, here, = way to induce more gameplay by scrounging for items to give you more adventures. And, as someone who has spent hours in front of a screen playing that game, many of them consecutive, I'm actually sort of glad they have a mechanism which eventually gives you a reason to go do something else.

Also, You Have to Burn the Rope--> http://www.kongregate.com/games/Mazapan/you-have-to-burn-the-rope

Game of the year.
