Free Comic Book Day

So today is May 5th. And it's Free Comic Book Day.

So is anyone going? This will be my first time I've attended. Kinder crazy to travel 3 hours or so, just for a free comic book, but for me it's to hang out with folks in costumes, just like at conventions.

Not all, but most, and with my luck those truly crap ones will be the only ones at my comic dealer when I get there, like last time. Pass. I'll lay out money and get what I want later.

As long as you know in advance the store you intend to visit is making an event out of the day. I'd hate for you to travel 3hrs and find out the LCS only has a small table by the register with a limit of 2 per customer or some such and no one is dressed up as you're hoping.

My closest store does have a supplied person in costume for photo-op. Last year his 22yr old volleyball playing sister dressed as Supergirl and a store employee was Ghost Rider.
He also has fifty cent and dollar boxes a plenty!!

I would go, but I have to be at work.

One of the shops here in Austin will have Peter Mayhew & Aaron Alston signin' autographs. Don't feel too bad about missin' that one, though, since I've already met Chewbacca...

You crazy Aussies and your time-bending ways. One of these days you're going to fracture the space-time continuum. Tomorrow is Free Comic Book day!

In Sydney there would have been at least 50 people who dressed up. It was fun putting on my costume again. It's been six months since I've wore the Spock costume.

I ended up getting three comics, but today wasn't about comics, more about cosplay (as I'm already thinking about my next costumes for the next convention)

Nah ... tomorrow is Sunday.

Went today and picked up my free comic books, along with some issues of The Avengers (movie) prelude books.

Got The New 52 one, a Spider-man one, and a Serenity/Star Wars one (flip issue.) The Serenity one is meh. I guess there isn't much one can expect from a free comic book, rough art and quick nothing story. (Mal's almost killed over Serenity but gets his ass saved by River. I don't know what was revealed in any post-Serenity comic books but this one had Zoe pregnant.) I've not really looked at the other free comic books, I've flipped through the Black Widow prelude book and got my fill of cheesecake in it, will read it later along with the "Fury's Big Week" issues. The Widow book is 1 of 3 to be released over the next few weeks.

I went to pick up the newest issue of "Avengers vs. X-Men."

While I was there, I picked up the Serenity comic, Avengers Age of Ultron, and the Buffy vs. Alien comic.

The bloom came off the rose for me on this a few years ago, but then I'm a regular buyer of comics and the event is aimed at people who aren't. A couple shops around town make an event of it, but it's only been a week since the Calgary Entertainment Expo so needless to say a lot of us are "con'ed out".

I also lost interest when I realized that most of the free comic books are basically just promo items (as opposed to full-length comics). One year most of the ones that I picked up were either reprints of selected scenes or simply previews followed by some interviews with the artists and the like. This year I thought of going anyway, but we got hit with a blizzard of all things yesterday to so I decided it wasn't worth the effort for what it is.

Plus it sounds like DC's New 52 dominated and I won't give that the time of day.

i picked up the new 52 and transformers 80.5. i really liked the transformers one, a nice tease to the continuation of the old marvel comic, which i still have all the issues of.

There is a comic book store across the street from my apartment. They have some people in costume and Jerry "The King" Lawler signing autographs.

I missed it this year due to work. :(
