http://tvline.com/2016/01/15/24-legacy-revival-fox-new-series-pilot-kiefer-sutherland/ Also like 24: Live Another Day it will consist of 12 episodes. Not sure that this will work without Kiefer Sutherland because so much of the success of 24 is because of him and the character of Jack Bauer. It'll be hard to capture the magic again.
Well, 24 had trouble maintaining that magic in its original run (how many bad days can one man really have?), but the main protagonist description, including casting a Black actor, sounds a lot like the Chris Tanner character from Live Another Day, a US airman who was framed for a drone strike against his own C.O. until Jack cleared his name. In our current witch hunt society, it wouldn't be hard for someone like him to be demonized by society, even after he was found innocent. The problem with Chris Tanner is that he was played by none other than John Boyega, who might be now too expensive for a TV show, though he'd certainly have the chops to lead the cast. In any case, it's either recast Tanner (less likely) or create a brand new protagonist (far more likely, as the article basically says).
I don't mind if there is no Bauer, I'd be very happy with Kate Morgan as the focus (Although it might draw comparisons to Homeland). In either case, I love 24, so I'd be happy to see it return. I do think the 12 hour format benefited it, so they might be smart to stick with that.
Happy to have more 24, but I'm also suspicious that there cult of personality surrounding the character of Jack Bauer is probably the only thing that has kept the series running since about it's third season. The new lead had better be strong.
I'm looking forward to this. 24 ran too long but I always a fan of the format and I really enjoyed Live Another Day. It was a very welcome return after not having the show all those years. I think the show can survive without Jack Bauer.
The 24 wiki says that it's a new character named Eric Carter. And that the new series will be called 24: Legacy.
I'll tune in. Jack Bauer is this show to a lot of people, but Kiefer wasn't going to play him forever. It'll be interesting to see this new direction.
I might tune in, but with no Jack, it will almost be a different show. It's also a shame we couldn't get Kate back, as I thought she was one of the best parts about Live Another Day.
Not sure If I'll tune or not, have to wait and see. Though perhaps they should have gone with a female protaganist rather than male. Might add a new spin.
I enjoyed 24 at first, but the problem with the show is that each season they had to make the villain and the threat bigger and badder. I would enjoy a return to a smaller scale of storytelling, that doesn't necessarily involve a massive terror attack. Otherwise, we will eventually get 24: Independence Day where Jack (or whomever) has to stop aliens from annihilating the earth.
As I recall, Los Angeles managed to survive a NUCLEAR BOMB GOING OFF INSIDE THE CITY, so I figure aliens must already be involved.
I'm with you on both points, especially the first. Yeah, I'll check it out, but to me, Jack was always the heart and soul of this show. I at least hope that they at some point resolve the issue of Jack being in a Russian prison.
I'm curious about the new take. It will be interesting to see if it can replicate the success of the original show. Though it's a different time so perhaps that's not possible to be as impactful as the original show, but still it could provide some gripping, interesting watching. And maybe actually add something to the formula. I wonder too if 24 can move beyond Bauer? The show was his show, his journey. Can you take the trappings and remove him and is it still 24? Can the "world of 24" exist without Bauer? Star Trek did it with the 24th century Trek and Stargate has done it, but other attempts like Babylon 5's spin offs weren't as successful. I wonder if the new show will give any nods at all to the previous series? I mean, there's still one Palmer alive. Perhaps Regina King-who is busy on American Crime-could do a guest spot or cameo as a senator or the new president. Maybe the Palmers' kids are still around too, and one might be a Congressmen or government official by this point. It would be cool to see Chloe again as well. Or Kate Morgan from Live Another Day. And to get a mention or two about Jack's fate.
I think it would be far better if he was called Eric Cartman. That would rock. I'll give it a go but I too am sceptical about a Jack-free 24. Keifer really held the attention even at the show's weakest (seasons 6 & 8 for me) and I think it's particularly unfortunate that we don't look to be getting any closure for his storyline, after he was left in that Russian gulag. The bonus feature on the LAD blu-ray also makes me pine for a return and redemption for Tony.
I'm skeptical this will work without Kiefer (ie. be popular enough to survive) but I'll watch the first few eps at least when it comes out.
