Fotonovel #13: Spock's Brain, real or fake

For years I thought there were only twelve, but just noticed that over at Memory Alpha, there is a listing and cover photo (or cover foto) for this one.

Actual release or a fan produced job?

When I went to place a link here, I saw that the cover photo was gone. Guess it was a fake which was quickly edited out.

Interesting. I have to assume that its either a fan-job, or unproduced, as this is the first I've ever heard of it.

If you check the letters section in the back of some of the Fotonovels, Mandala Production did mention that if the books continued to sell well, they might be able to do more. But no, only twelve.

The concept was continued by Pocket Books, with a "Photostory" version for ST:TMP and, in b/w, for ST II.

It's a shame they never continued with these. But at least nowadays, we can make our own home-brewed ones.

I remember how thrilled I was when during a visit to Jacksonville Florida, the husband and I found a comic book store that had all of these! (I had 2 or 3). I bought all the ones I didn't have.

Ah, the days before lots of books and DVDs.

I still have my photonovels too.

I believe it's a forgery. Here's why.

The pointer, or tail, of the speech balloon is not anti-aliased; there is a definite staircase effect. An original of the 1970's would not have had any visible staircasing on the balloon tail. Therefore, the visible staircasing is a sign that the image was neither photographed nor scanned. It is a sign that it was 'shopped. Choosing not to anti-alias the speech balloon pointer was either done on purpose to lower quality, as a clue, or done accidentally due to ineptitude on the part of the forger.

The font in the speech balloon is also wrong. For starters, there is definite pixelation visible in it, again an error.

It's cute though, isn't it.

And it seems to be gone for good now. And let's face it, why would Mandala Productions, after choosing 12 fan favorites, follow them up with an episode that is generally acknowledged to be among the worst of TOS?

Among hoaxes, "Fotonovel 13" isn't quite as funny as all that horse hockey a few years ago about Star Trek originating as a late-19th-century series of dime novels, before appearing as a theatrical serial, but it's certainly not as sick as the "Requiem for a Martian" hoax (the only redeeming virtue of which is that it made for a clever Uncyclopedia article).

I remember picking up all 12 at once back in the early 2000's. I had never seen them before, and I remember the book store had an elastic band around all 12 since they were selling them as one item, not 12 individual books.

As I recall, the supposed previous incarnations of Star Trek were described in ways that seemed downright Steampunk, and had a whole list of previous ships and captains. I think it may have even made Uncyclopedia at one point. But it seems to be more-or-less gone without a trace.

A steampunk version of Star Trek might be rather interesting. After all, Doctor Who went steampunk, when you consider the interior design of the Tardis in the late Sylvester McCoy/Paul McGann-Christopher Eccleston era.

Anybody here ever read the Lol Trek version of "The Trouble With Tribbles"? They even did the commercials Lolcat-style.
