For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOILER]

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

Is the word Augment used in the film? To refer to Khan and his people.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

I'm going to go ahead and suggest it is the same reason why nobody really looks or sounds like the TOS cast.

I dunno, I thought for the most part everybody was a good approximation. Like, they at least didn't cast a British white Uhura.

But hey, it's not like they didn't try for Khan. We know that they tried to get Benicio Del Toro, and I'm sure he would've been passable as having similar looks (and even persona) as Montalban. I'm not sure if that was the best aim, but whatever, what's done is done. They rebooted.

I agree, actors like Karl Urban was in no way SIMILAR TO DeForest Kelly...lol

Doesn't count, I'm still convinced Karl Urban is being possessed by DeForest Kelly..

All in all, with everything said and done, I don't care that they did pick Khan. Cumby is so fucking awesome, they could have made him play Father Christmas, and he'd still pull it off.
I almost wish they had picked Father Christmas. At least he hasn't been a villain in Star Trek before. ;)

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

I think this movie does indeed show Khan different to the TOS version because of the events that have preceded the movie [...]
Is that also where he got his British accent and different ethnicity? ;)

It's the 23rd century. I've been working on the basis that Admiral Marcus had further cosmetic surgery or genetic alterations carried out to Khan to perfect his John Harrison disguise. And as a superhuman with enhanced abilities, it probably wasn't beyond Khan to adopt a new accent to further maintain his new persona.

I would've liked some explanation onscreen but not everything needs spelled out. If anything, I was more surprised that Carol Marcus suddenly had a clipped English accent!

Ah in that case no. No explanation for new appearance... just like there is no explanation for Kirks new appearance or Spock/Scotty/Uhura etc - I am sure if Montalban had not aged and then died he would have been contacted ;)

I thought OP was referring to how Khan acts in the movie not his new appearance.

Ehhhh maybe to a degree. I think they did a better job of approximating who the characters are but for my money Quinto was the only one who really came close to actually looking like Nimoy.

It's not something that bothers me. I just think it is a silly argument. Personally trying to find someone who looks more like the previous actor would verge on mocking the character for me or at the very least a parody.

So what do you think of them originally going with Benicio Del Toro? That's basically what they were doing, trying to find someone who was very similar. They only ended up with Cumberbatch because Del Toro presumably wanted too much, and because all of the other Latino actors who auditioned just didn't have what Cumberbatch had.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

Interesting part of that article:
The thing is, the only reason these characters were white in the first place was that comic books were created in a time when nobody would have printed a book about a non-white superhero (having female superheroes was difficult enough, and they were handled with something less than dignity). But nowadays, the people responsible for these characters are trying to make their properties as inclusive and welcoming as they possibly can, because everybody likes comic books, not just white people.

I think that article is about the opposite of what you intended.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

I've had some time to think about this, and really for myself, the performance of Ricardo Montalblan as Khan was so good, that recasting another actor almost felt sacrilegious to me as a huge fan of his Khan. I got caught up in the whole, 'skinny white dude' playing Khan for a while, but kinda wish they left the character alone

Khan is such an overly obvious choice, I really was hoping for rogue Cpt Robert April rumor -that would have been great. Hell, for a while when the rumor was that Cumberpatch might have been Gary Mitchell, I was screaming out, 'casting of the decade' comments, then when its Khan, I was asking, 'what's with the pasty Brit dude?!?!?"

Its all in the perception.

They did. In ST:V.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

Thought Cumberbatch was a fantastic Khan, though he didn't steal scenes for me like he's been doing for others. That's not a bad thing, though -- I just feel like Pine, Quinto, et al did a better job keeping up with him than many critics have stated.

Weller was great too!
