For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOILER]

hey all - ok, Cumberpatch is Khan, but having seen trailers, and commercials, he acts so different than the R Montalban version.

Does this movie explain why the character acts/seems so different than the original series version?

I am kinda over the fact they chose Khan - such an 'obvious' choice

I don't think he does either. This Khan matches up to the one in Space Seed quite well. Cold, Calculating but not averse to getting his hands dirty. His different to the one in TWOK, but the one in TWOK was revenge thirsty, slightly insane and had spent nearly 30 years trapped on a dying planet.

I think this movie does indeed show Khan different to the TOS version because of the events that have preceded the movie and how they have forced Cumberkhan into terrorism. So yes, the movie does explain why we are seeing a different Khan imo.

He reverts to a more stereotypical MontalKHAN near the end.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone!!

Is that also where he got his British accent and different ethnicity? ;)

Okay, I'm expecting mockery coming my way, you know, because of all those anti-Khan rants...but seriously, the old version was kind of a dumbass. This one is awesome mccool. He is smart, strong, overall perfect, and a woobie, destroyer of worlds (my favourite kind of villain). They don't explain his origins per se, but they give him much better motivations than they gave the dumbass version.

All in all, with everything said and done, I don't care that they did pick Khan. Cumby is so fucking awesome, they could have made him play Father Christmas, and he'd still pull it off.

The origins are probably meant to be the same, but I don't think it matters at all to the character or the plot.

Is it a bigger deal than the switch in Saaviks from ST II to ST III? One was scripted as a Romulan-Vulcan hybrid and yet Director Nimoy recast her, altered her eyebrows, directed her to be all-Vulcan, and even banned Robin Curtis from researching Kirstie Alley's portrayal.

Cumberbatch is excellent as Khan.
It's worth pointing out that they dropped the skin-darkening makeup way back in Wrath of Khan. They also changed Khan's followers to universally white and blond in that movie, implying they were some kind of genetically engineered Aryan group.

Carol Marcus now has a British accent too.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

I don't think it's a big deal at all. I didn't mind then, and I certainly don't mind now, especially because in this continuity, they didn't switch actors or ethnic background of the character for whatever reason. As long as it doesn't influence the story in an unfortunate way, I don't believe the origins matter very much.

Oh, and I was so happy about Khan being English (or at least having an English accent). If they had tampered with Cumby's accent, I would have flipped out.

This nuKhan was no better villain than Nero had been, but that is not Cumberbatch's fault. He just didn't have enough time to breathe life into this character. The majority of his lines had been released in clips and trailers, and the movie didn't add much to what we've already seen there. I expected so much more ... :(

When I think about it ... some of his best lines from the trailers weren't even in the movie!

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

I already disagreed with you once on this in another thread.... :) I think his character was as fleshed out as he needed to be, and Cumberbatch did a spectacular job selling it. The man is perfect in all his roles.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

I am kinda over the shock that Khan is now a ghostly white dude with a British accent. Cumberkhan I'm sure will be fun to watch. Just glad the pathetic charade that JJ was trying to pull on fans is now over.

Hey, just glad to hear that 5 minute shower scene with Uhura is apparently real!!!

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

What's wrong with ghostly white skin or perfect NRP English? How is that in any way shocking?

Then again, I might simply not be getting the joke. * shrugs *

And I must disagree again ... :-)

I had hoped that with all the hype leading to the release of this movie, Cumberbatch's character would be some kind of Moriarty to Kirk. Some super intelligent guy that is playing cat and mouse with the Enterprise crew while leading Earth and Starfleet into darkness.

But he didn't even begin to be anything like that. He had the power to crush other peoples heads and to withstand the stunn setting ... and there was something to the way he spoke, but other than that? Again, this is not Cumberbatch's fault ... I think he did the best he could with what he was given. But the character needed more screentime and more depth!

Nothing at all, I just didn't like how Cumberpatch had ZERO resemblance to the original actor. The look nor voice, nor presence (in trailers) bore anything that screamed out "Khan" to me

Why have a character called "Khan" that you have to tell the audience, 'yup, that's Khan!!!'

If he had played an original character, I would have been 100000% thrilled in the casting of this actor

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

Ah, okay. Well, I don't mind that, in fact I rather prefer him to not look like the original (because face it, the character design was a little silly). I have ranted so badly about Khan being retarded, that I'm happy he wasn't in this one. The distinct sense of danger you get from Cumby's version is something the original one lacked completely (imho).

I would have been happy if he had got more screen time, however.

Why, what's wrong with it? He's an Asian/Middle Eastern tyrant, specifically a Sikh.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

Sorry, I meant the character design from TWOK, not TOS.

Re: For those who've seen movie: Cumberbatch character question [SPOIL

Are you kidding? He looked even cooler in TWOK.

But his British accent needed some work.
